Odometer Driving Me Nuts!

My 2000 Sunfire has an odometer problem. It still keeps track of the milage, but the digital display is haywire. Numbers phase in and out, might only show partial numbers, or just plain disappear. What could cause this and how can it be remedied? Cost? Anything I can try before taking it in to get serviced? Also, when I press against the plastic plate that covers the instrument panel, the numbers on the odometer are normal but when I let go, it goes postal again. Any help is appreciated!

sounds like the LCD (or led, not real sure whats in there) has gone bad to me, and the bad part is I believe the only fix is a replacement (on both). look at it this way, if you do it yourself, you can also get an overlay for the guages and kill two birds with one stone.

Is it possible to replace the digital odometer with a regular odometer? Would that be cheaper than fixing a digital one?

I have been having the same problems with my 99 Sunfire odometer. I have now had it replaced twice and I am extremely upset with the dealer that I have been dealing with. They will not help me and told me that it was not their problem and that I should contact GM. Well, I know exactly what GM is going to say to me, they are going to tell me that I am nuts just like the first time I contacted them about this problem. I took my digital camera, took a picture and got some video of the trip light coming on, the decimal place showing up, the numbers all changing to 8's and an extra line added in. Once they replaced it the second time, it was fine for over a year until they(the dealer) went in there for some unknowen reason while working on a recall, and now they are telling me that they didn't do anything and that it just sounds like it's going AGAIN!! I have no idea what to do, and I am not forking out the $3-400 CDN. to get it fixed. At this moment in time I want to get it fixed at their expense and then sell the car as quick as possible!

Is it even possible to get an analog odometer installed to replace a digital odometer?

I also have the exact same problem in a '98. Every few months, exactly as described above. Problem goes away as quickly as it starts, without doing anything to it. I guess I'll just ignore it, but sounds like a common problem GM should be made aware of. If it was a safety problem, I bet they'd be on it already!

I to have a 2000 sunfire and some time when i drive the digital numbers go wacky , i took it upon myself to take hte dash apart to see just maybe the connection was a little loose , but all seamed ok , put it back together and still doing the same thing along with driving me Crazy , so i did a little research and come the thsi one guy told me to take it apart again and bend the pin just a little when they connect to the wiring , i am going to try this for sure in the near future when i got some spare time on my hands to take the dash apart again , i will keep u posted to see if this saved me a trip the the dealers and save myself lots of cash . chow chow for now

It's getting worse. I really don't want to dish out $500+ for this repair.

I'm sure it's no consolation, but I have exactly the same problem with my Chevy Cavalier. (Aren't the Sunfire and Cavalier pretty much the same car?) I've been going around and around with the dealer about the cost of this repair.
