Thinking about getting a 99-02 cougar

Hi guys,
I've been thinking about getting myself a 99-02 cougar. They look awesome, but what are your experiences with them? Is there any reason to stay away from one model to the next? How many miles until the car will die? Is their a mileage mark that I should completely avoid?
Basically, I'm looking at getting a car to replace my current suv. I'm probably going to spend 10k, but wouldn't mind spending less. I've seen a lot of reasonable prices on cougars on Ebay, and local papers. Opinions would be appreciated.
If not the cougar, any other options or opinions? I'm looking for something sporty. Thanks,
Jason

if you see a cougar run - run very very fast - - they are based on the failed countour/mystique line - but seem to have even more problems than the originals did - and those of us in the field didn't think you could get worse than the contour

that would explain their low prices. It's too bad that such a sharp looking car has the reputation. Guess i'll have to find a different model that i like

About the 99-02 Cougar. That's true about the problems. But let's stress one thing. No matter if you buy a Hummer or Honda or anything in between, you will have problems. They come with the car. The 99-02 Cougar does have its share of problems but they are so common that you could easily take care of them before they really "kick in." Besides, buy what you like. The 99-02 Cougars are very underestimated. They have tons of potential. Well, later!

The cougar is a beautiful car. It is true that all cars have problems. i have a 98 explorer right now though, and it has been a solid car for me. It has 57k miles on it, and I haven't really had one problem. I'm just very scared about giving up a dependable car for something that isn't going to give me the same benefit.
I WANT a cougar. Black probably :-)

yeah insurance wise it will cost more. but it also cost more for red cars, two seaters, and etc. that you can check with your insurace company on how much more it'll cost you.....
