mitsu makes it official...(evo)

If anyone hasn't seen the new issue of motor trend, the lancer evo 7 is heading to the states. I love my g20, but it'd make a pretty nice down payment on the evo. They aren't doing it like subaru did with the WRX, it's going to be the full power version, and they're slating it to come out 4th quarter of this year. I know that it's heresy to say I will sell the g, but come on guys... Who doesn't want a lancer evo?

Yeah, but if it does come to the states, it'll be alot toned down from the 4wd monster they got in Japan. I think it'll be a real competitor for the WRX though.

Personally, i think the new EVO is ugly as hell. What is up with that monster grill? Ugh. I can't believe Mitsubishi has sold ANY of the non-EVO Lancers. Ugly and horrible reviews. Sure, it's better than the Mirage, but that's not saying much.

The Lancer they are selling right now arnt Evo's, they are just plain pos Mirage's with a Lancer label on them. The Lancer Evo 7 that will be coming out looks a lot different (dont have a pic thou).

I actually dont like the new Evo 7 as much as the Evo 5 and Evo 6. I wouldnt mind trading in my G20 for a Evo 6 but I wouldnt do it for a Evo 7. Cant wait to see the Evo's in the states thou.

First of all, Mitsu's are half built at the factory. Spot a mid 90's Mitsu in traffic and it's probably burning oil. They dont sweat the details on materials and technology they try to implement and as a result, shit starts happening after 50000 miles. They just don't last.

Second, the EVO is coyote ugly.

Third, Good luck finding a dealer worth a damn. Lousy dealer network. Very hit or miss proposition.

Save your money and buy a Subaru when the popularity cools down or one of the hotter Nissan products coming out now. I cant wait to laugh at someone who paid sticker + to drive the first EVO on the street....

Definitely less ugly than the "normal" Lancer, but still not as good looking as the EVO VI. Is it just me or does that rear wheel well look too small? At least they got rid of that god-awful grill that the regular Lancer has. Perhaps having ~250hp and AWD would make me overlook the styling. Or maybe someone will make a front spoiler that will make it look a little better.

The one big bonus that this car will have over the WRX (besides a little more horsepower) is interior room. The WRX is a pretty small car but the new Lancer is supposed to be fairly roomy.

I'll consider the EVO when it's new car time, but the looks are really going to have to grow on me. Call me nuts but i still prefer the bug-eyed WRX as far as styling goes.

I can't beleive a fellow G20 owner would say the Evo is ugly. It actually resembles the G20...they are both four door Japanese cars. Show 10 people a picture of a WRX and an Evo together, I promise 8 out of 10 will go for the Evo...it is a better looking car...

The WRX is not going to be comparable to the US Evo, especially not the J-spec one. And what the hell is Nissan coming out with that is "hotter" than an Evo??? The SE-R Spec V?? Sure it's a nice car that has some performance but put it next to an Evo and it will be outperformed in EVERY category. Nissan is bringing back the Z but we are talking about 4 door performance cars here, not 2 seaters with a trunk the size of a glove box. And don't even talk about the new G35 which is just poor excuse for the Skyline.

The Evo will NOT be detuned at all for the US market.
It will still have the 300plus horsepower that it has always had--(dont ever believe the jap-limited 276hp!!!), and it will still do 0-60 in under 5 secs and still kick all ass. The only changes will be to the drive side(of course, hehe), and some certification problems with the intercooler/bumper packaging and California emission regulations. The intention is to bring the car over as is, with changes limited to satisfying government requirements. And it should also sticker in the high 20s to the low 30s:D

I was pretty sure that the mirage and lancer were always built on the same platform, the mirage having more weak-ass engines and such. I agree with you 100 percent about the 5/6 being better looking. The difference is that the 7 handles better from what I read, and it will be 100% legal here. I could get a grey-market evo 5 or 6, but I've heard it's a bitch to get grey cars insured, or get car loans for them etc...

So, yeah, the older ones are cooler in my book, but the new one I can actually have, instead of just dreaming of....

What does the Lancer's performance have to do with any of the comments that have been made? Nobody said it couldn't perform. I (along with a few others) said that it's ugly. Someone else mentioned a bad dealer network and poor quality. I think that everyone with a shred of common sense would agree that the EVO will be quick. We're just not chomping at the bit to buy one.

What in the world makes you say that? From what i've read the EVO will have about 20-30 more horsepower. I'm not exactly sure how the weights compare but i would guess the Subaru to have a slight edge. I believe that the EVO will probably be slightly faster in a straight line, but to say that the WRX is not comparable is utter nonsense. 10% more power does not automatically make the EVO a "WRX Killer". It'll be faster, but not THAT much faster.

Comparing the SE-R to the EVO is just silly. They're both four door sedans and that's where the similarities end. The EVO has more power, AWD, and a much higher price tag. If someone is seriously looking at purchasing the Lancer EVO, i highly doubt that the SE-R will even enter their mind.

Ditto for comparing the G35. The Lancer and G35 are not competing products at all. Again, they're both sedans and that's the only similarity. If/when Nissan announces a Skyline for the US market, then maybe there will be something to compare.

Why would you say the G35 is a poor excuse for the Skyline? They are designed from the same platform but they are not designed to be in the same class. The G35 doesn't have AWD, all wheel steering and twin turbos but it still has *plenty* of horsepower, four doors, a leather interior with all the cushy amenities, loads of room, a big trunk, etc. And it doesn't cost $80K like the Skyline. Everyone bitches and moans about the Skyline not being offered in the US but there are only so many people who are willing to pony up 80 grand for a car.

IMO, the Lancer and G35 are not comparable, but given the choice between the two i would definitely take the G35. It might not be quite as fast off the line, but it's just a nicer car. I'm curious to see what Nissan does with the Skyline two years down the road.

Buy a subaru? thats even uglier, who makes a car with frog eyed head lamps. You'd be stupid to buy a subaru over the evo considering the reviews and tests they've been through, 3/4 saying they'd prefer the evo.

But in all your conditions (US folks) I dont blame you for going for a Subaru, there is still some confusion about the EVO's arrival even thought its been 'confirmed'.

To further that.....The only one who preffered the Subaru (keep in mind the STI, notthe plain WRX) preffered it for non performance reasons....His reasons were as follows, Likes the 6 speed trans feel (sort of performance) Liked the inside styling better (whoooooooo cares) Liked the sound of the boxter (once again, whoooooo cares) and he could get the subaru sideway (The mitsu AYC made it difficult for him to do so.) The evo is lighter...Faster....more advanced...looks better....the choice is clear to me.

Please explain what you mean by confusion. Motor trend said it was confirmed. Was that just wishful thinking, or are the mitsu people that make these decisions still not positive it's coming?

And wow, many people have been saying it but to reiterate, the JDM WRX STi is directly compared to EVO models because they are roughly in the same price range.

Because, while we can't be exactly sure how much the USDM EVO7 will cost, we don't know exactly but it is likely that the USDM EVO7 will be competition for the USDM WRX STi and not the USDM WRX.

Mitsu is saying 28k base up to 32k fully loaded. I went to the subaru website and built a wrx with options I wanted like the gauge package and rear wing, 17' wheels etc, and it ended up being over 30k, so I guess they should be pretty evenly priced. According to one of the salespeople at the subie dealership, they are seriously considering more power for next year. I don't know if that means STI or not, guess we'll have to wait and see.

I actually think the US will get the EVO 7. I read today in MOTOR magazine (Australia) Under Performance Car Pipeline (pg 138), in 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VII - Yanks say 'yes', it's all good for us!

This must mean you guys will get the VII, also the US is being highly considered to take delivery of the Automatic GT-A (Grand Touring-Automatic).

The GT-A was most likely the rumour/idea/thought of the 'watered down' Evo VII which was talked about im assuming.

The evo 7 should only be compared to the wrx sti.. not the wrx.. and i am not liking the 30k + prices i hear about the Evo and the STi.. little out my price range.. didnt they promise a -30k price for the evo?

I'm sure it will be like the new 350Z coming out. It's marketed as under 30K but when you add the options you would like on the car it goes up quickly to 34-35K range. I would imagine the Evo will be the same.

I just wanna know the exact specs of the EVO VII the US will be getting. All these rumors are driving me nuts. I pray its not watered down, and if it is , that it has no less than 260 BHP. I really can't wait to see what we will get in the US.

There may be something on motor trend's website, but according to their mag, it WILL be the 276 hp version, which probably has more like 300+ hp, since japanese hp ratings are usually lower than u.s. ratings. Something fast is in my future....

1st: in Japan, the STI sell for around $40,000 US and the Evo VII sells for around $25,000 US. go the the japanese websites for each manufacturer if you don't believe me. the two cars compete in performance, but not in price range. this is to mudmojo, DO SOME RESEARCH STUPID!

2nd: all reports from ANY reputable car mag i've seen state that the Evo VII will be sold for UNDER $30,000. so quit all the bullshit about the $40,000 price range.

3rd: if you haven't actually put any time into researching the Evo VII, then don't post bullshit information trying to look cool. you say some bullshit on here, then lazy people on here trust you without looking into any REAL information. don't post information on here unless you're willing to back it up with reputable sources.

You know what's really funny? I started this thread in the G20 forum. Fr obvious reasons it got moved over here. I went to the local mitsu dealer today, talked to the sales manager, and he had NO CLUE when or if the evo would be coming to the states. So, my question is: Is motor trend full of crap? Is it just "hopefully" they may import the car, or does anyone here have any actual facts from mitsu about the situation? I thought MOTOR TREND would be a reputable source, but I may be wrong. If they are lying, consider my subscription cancelled. That is not to say they've never lied before, it just wasn't about anything that I gave a flip over.
