what is rev limiter?

When your car goes past redline, it will eventually hit a rev-limiter about 200 or 300 rpm after redline. You basically wanna hold the cars RPMS just infront of the rev-limiter for as long as possible. But make sure you double clutch, so you don't blow the welds on your intake manifold.

You don't have to double clutch on most newer cars. I dunno if it still helps while racing, though.

so the higher the rev limiter, the better?

Not really. A car with 200 hp is a car with 200 hp, whether it makes it at 7500 rpm or 5500 rpm. A high redline is generally better for road racing, because it usually gives you a bigger powerband and lets you hold the car in gear longer. Cars with lower redlines generally (note: I used the word generally, not the word always. please don't flame me, I'm making a generalization) have more torque, or at least more accessable torque. And a reving a car too much past its redline causes problems unless you've built the engine to handle it.

And double clutching is only used either a) on an old car without synchromesh or b) when the synchros on a certain gear are shot and you're driving to the transmission shop.

so, I have a 3000GT, and I have a choice of picking either 7300, 7800, or 8300 which should I get? I want my car to be a daily driver with its 450hp

umm i have an auto so im not shifting expert but wouldnt you want to avoid redline? I mean my engine redlines at 7,000 RPMS, but it produces its max power at 150HP @ 5,500 RPM and 155lbs TQ @ 4,400 RPM, anything over than that and im actually losing power, so redlining a car while racing doesnt seem like the smart thing to do. It seems more so you want to learn where you power is at, not just slam the RPMS through the rough. but im believe their is a correlation between Redline RPMS and HP overall for the engine, meaning the higher the redline the more HP the engine has, but the longer it takes the engine to get into its peak powerband.

You have a 3000GT with 450hp? Can you please list your mods and perhaps post some pics of the car??

It doesn't matter what you set the redline as, in the end, it is still you that's going to control the throttle and when to shift. Redline is only there to protect your engine, and when you pass it, it cuts fuel(rev limiter).

not to sound like a jackass arighjt now (cuz im drunk of course) but if you dotn konw what a rev limiter is or how to drive it in standard then you \shouldnt be drinvign a 450 hp 3000gt,you should start off with something easier to handle cuz you could kill yourslef in acar like that u konw

lol its ok i got it and i thought it was funny. they made quite a few stupid comments in that movie :grinno:

i hope the person who said about the doubling clutching is joking. lolz no body double clutches anymore since the 60's after cars started using synchronizers in the transmissions. the only thing similar to doubling clutching is heel and toe. which is used to downshift into the powerband smoothly.

Heel-toe, double clutching, rev matching, whatever you want to call it... :)

ok i clear this up for him cause the post will be filled with people that were smart and didnt pay attention to the words in that movie, what he was talking about double clutching was a line in fast & furious when vin diesel was talking to paul walker about the first race.

but your not understanding what i'm trying to ask. i'm wondering if that guy who said that was kidding because no body double clutches during a upshift. its not even possible anymore and it will definitly slow you down. that line in the movie was pure bullshit, along with like another 50 million things in that movie.

^lol^ very true. i saw a burn out show and a stang had 20's on it and could barley even smoke his tires.

look, the best thing to do is just drive the car and see what gives you the best launch. don't push your car to hard because from the sound of it it's a sweet car so don't blow the engine. if you can find some roads you can try your car out. The the best way to find your rev limiter is to drive, drive, drive. don't worry about it to much, it's all in good fun. just don't race for cash till you know your car better.

just look up the stock rev limiter stats, unless the previous owner did some internal engine work, its prolly really close to its stock rev limit.

Yes, I was joking. I also told him to hold it in the redline so he would blow his engine up, because I'm a jackass.

i agree with what the other guy said, if you have a 450hp 3000gt and are asking questions like this... well just learn to drive the car first, we'll talk about rev limiters later

first off, if you don't know what a rev limiter is (or why it's there) you shouldn't be driving a 450hp 3000gt.

second... WHAT ARE YOU DOING MESSING WITH WHERE IT'S SET!?!?

it is in place for a reason: so you don't blow up your motor when you decide to keep your foot down past the effective power band. in the most basic terms, a rev limiter is there to make sure you don't overrev your engine (resulting in a boom).

ac427cpe, you took the words right out of my mouth.
listen to what he said, thats all you need to know. leave your rev limiter alone
