tail light and headlight housing

I got some aftermarket taillights and headlights and i was wondering if i cud paint the housing (not the lens or any other part). they come in black and carbon fiber but i was wonderin if i cud paint it a different color like red. i've also seen it in color but it matched the cars body color so it didnt look modified. i think the law is nothing that interferes with the light and im pretty sure this doesnt. let me kno if its legal or not.

as long as the lights and lens stay the same then you should be ok. i'd be careful if you're going to paint the housing red though. cops might not like that too much and since you modified it the DOT approval probably wouldn't apply.
