Accessory question

Hello all, here's a new question for you:

I want to add some accessories to my 96 firebird. They all have the standard 12vdc lighter plugs, etc, so that's no problem, but I want them to turn off when I turn off my car. Obviously, then, I want them to turn back on when my car turns on. Is there a way to do this? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Dan

There is a way to do this. It has something to do with tapping into the ignition wiring or so that it is powered when the car is running and no longer grounded when it is turned off. This might help..

I have done this many times on other cars, mostly to install alarm systems. The easiest place to find switched power is usually at the fusebox. If you have a voltmeter, or just a cheap 12-volt test light from radio shack, you can find a fuse number that only supplies power when the key is on, usually the Ignition or Accessory fuses do this. If you can get to the back of the fusebox and solder your connections it will be cleaner looking than putting wires through the front where the fuses go in, and wires will stay put better. Try to attach any wires to the side of the fuse socket that does not have power if you take the fuse out, that way your devices will be protected by the fuse. Use strand wire that is not too thin. Depending on how much power you need, you might have to increase the fuse size but do that as little as possible or you risk damage to your wiring. Hope this helps.
