oil neck

i was bored so i just went out and removed the engine cover, something ive been lazy about doing (even tho it only takes a min, i donno) just wondering if the oil neck served any purpose other than extending out of the cover, or can i just put the cap back on w/o the neck?

It is just there to make it more convenient for you to add oil to the engine right out of the quart.
