mil = basically the "Check Engine" light.

An engine needs 3 things to run. Air, fuel, and spark for a gasser. Make sure you have proper fuel pressure/delivery, spark, spark timing, firing order, and air supply. Does it backfire through the exhaust or intake when it tries to start? Does it cough a couple times and not start or will it fire but not catch long enough to run?

Nobody has asked what engine your car has. If it's the turbo, I had a problem like this. It ran me ragged for a while until I pressure tested the fuel rail. The in-tank electric pump was bad (ruptured small rubber line). Mine would idle if the tank was full. If this sounds like a possibility, don't repair the pump. Install a new one and make sure the tank goes back in once!

Can't remember so I ask, is an '85 port or throttle body injection? If it's port, have you tried starting the car with the accelerator at part throttle? If not, try it and if it runs, you should look into a new TPS.
