have a motor Question

my 302 boss motor valve strts to tick loudly and the stops after awhile until you get it to a high RPM. I have tightened it down before but it came loose again. Could this turn into a major problem?

Do you have factory rockers or rollers? Aftermarket cam or stock? Hard valve seats or factory iron?

I'm not positive cause I'm not an old school Mustang guy but don't real Boss 302 motors have solid cams?

Actually, I believe they do, but in that case all the valves would tick. Hopefully they werent tightened down too much in an effort to make them stop. Otherwise some burned valves are in someone's future and the Boss has some that ar alot larger than stock(an not as easy to find).

Yea that was why I asked about the solid roller. A solid roller cam will be loud and always make a ticking like noise. Also you should really re-adjust a solid roller ever 5,000 miles.

the heads and cam are stock as far as i know. today it stopped ticking loudly. but at higher rpms it starts to tick but not so loudly.

Another question is are you sure you have a Boss302 motor? A real boss 302 motor is a pretty rare thing. A lot of people put cleveland heads on a 302 and get a replica or different intake manifold and will sell it as a boss302 motor.

how would i knoe if it was? it's pretty damn fast. the only thing aftermarket on it is a carb and intake manifold. That's what the quy said it was. how can i find out if it is?

Can you read any serial #'s?

i opened the valley cover up today and it said 302 on the head. does that mean it's a boss or not? i havent read any serial #'s yet, haven't checked.

Are the rockers lined up in a straight line or staggered?

If you can take a picture of it I could tell you if its at least got the right heads and block. If you pull a valve cover, the valvetrain should give it away. And Boss 302 valves aren't hard to find, they're just cleveland valves. They were bigger in '69(2.25 and 1.75 I think), in '70 they were stock cleveland(2.19/1.71), but both sizes are readily available. Ferrea 5000 series valves are on ebay all the time in both sized for around $150 with shipping.

the valves are lines up straight. What does this mean?

the guy said that the block was a 302 and not the heads. is this possible? i will see if the block is a 302 boss. Is there anything different's on the 302 boos block and the regular 302 that you can see from the outside?

You don't have Boss heads if the valves are inline, that's windsor. Maybe your motor has 351w heads on it? Give us some casting numbers and we'll have a better idea of whats goin on

well all i knoe now is the head says 302, so where can i find cast numbers?
