I'm looking to invest in a manual, and I was wondering which one is recommended. Either the Haynes, the Chilton or Keynes. Which one do you guys use? Which is the most informative and helpful for a beginner trying to learn more about his car?

haynes and chilton are both made by the same company, so either one of those would be good, i have the chiltons and has good pics, and detailed instructions.

The Helm's manual!!!
Helm's, Helm's, Helm's!!!!
www.helminc.com
Worth every penny and more - this is the official Honda manual. My Prelude one is somewhere around 600 pages - and it's specific to my year and trim. No other manual can match it.

The Helm's. The Chitlon and Haynes can be very anoying sometimes. I was helping a friend install a torque converter and shift with a Haynes manual as a guide. Step 3 read, "Remove transmission". Step 8 read "Repeat step 3 in reverse." Gee thanks. The equivalent Helm's manual will list all the bolts (and details), torque specs, ect. VERY good manual.

Then go to your local dealer and buy it there. I can't imagine a Honda dealer NOT carrying their own service manuals.

Actually, they don't!!!
Some silly agreement with Helm. I think they stopped in 1998. You have to get it by mail order.
Phrak - WTF?? $83 for shipping??? Did you ask for overnight by 8am shipping or something??? Try shipping by ground.
And as has been said - it's no joke - buying a Chilton or Haynes when there is a Helm's manual available is a total waste of money.

It depends on your dealer. Some are very (wink wink) if you know what I mean. Ironically the (wink wink) types always seem to have the best service over the by-the-books types.

Hunh?
I was just repeating what the parts counter guy said to me. He seemed fairly honest about it -- he even offered to let me use the computer behind the counter to let me order one off the net!

Which manual do I need? I have a 98 Civic EX Coupe, and I am planning on doing some engine work, mainly changing the cam, cam gear, valve springs and retainers, plus other random tasks that always manage to pop up.
1996-99 CIVIC 2/3/4 DOOR SHOP MANUAL- $67
1996-2000 CIVIC SERVICE MANUAL- $69
I think the Shop Manual is the one I want, I'm assuming the Service Manual is for oil changes and such. Please help. Thanks

You want the Helms service manual. With it, you can basically take the car completely apart and reassemble it using only that book.

As has been said before in this thread, buying anything other than a Helms is ridiculous. Best manuals ever, easily.

Sean Sean Sean,
It is like this... A. you go with the advice of the most knowladgable folks on this board, pay the extra and get the good book that will let you take apart anything on your car and ell you how to put it back together... or B. get the Haynes/Chilton (they really do suck I have personal expirence with them) get frustradted cause it doesn't help you do shit and then go do option A anyway. It is like anything with your (or at least my car) I would rather do it right with the right parts the first time then have to go back and buy the good stuff afterwards and spend more waste time etc. There you have it I don;t think there is anything else to cover except for locations etc so try here:
