95.5 Rodeo 3.2 4WD Starter problem

I just got home and my daughter said the Rodeo clicks several times before it will start. I went out and sure enough you can hear the solenoid hit but it takes a couple of times to turn the starter over.

I will look in the book and then work on it when I get a chance but is the solenoid integral to the starter on these?

Is it a pain to change?

Check the battery connect first and the grounds to the frame. Clean them up first and try again.

Yes. It's a major pain to get out. I had same symptom with my 95.5 Rodeo. Starter was getting stuck when engaging. Had mechanic replace starter and everythings good now.

Finally decided to change the starter last night.
Put it up on jacks and sprayed liquid wrench on the exhaust bolts and let it set unti tonight.

Bolts broke free no problem.
Took about 45 minutes start to finish including cleanup.

starter was 124.99 plus tax at Autozone.

It's definitly the starter. Soleniod is part of the starter, and comes as an assembly. I took my 95 to a local starter rebuilder and had it replaced for $95.00. Well worth the agravation I would have endured trying to do it myself. Got 1 year warranty on the starter as well. No problems starting now.
