Tranny Problem, Please Help

Has Anyone Had A Problem With Their Torque Converter. I Have A 97 Tahoe And It Has No Reverse.

I see you made an earlier post stating no reverse or second gear. There is a band in the trans for reverse and second and it may be worn out or broken.The torque converter code could possibly be a P1870 which indicates slippage which is what you would have if the band is worn out.

Is that something that is expensive or is it cheap and easy to fix? I don't really know much about mechanics. I am just trying to find out about what it could possible be before I take it to the mechanic shop. That way I dont get taken for a ride.

It is not going to be cheap if thats what it is because the trans has to be be removed and disassembled. If it is that it would be a wise choice to have the trans rebuilt. I am not sure what they charge in your area, But around here it is $1,300-2,000. Even if you don't have it rebuilt it is going to cost probably at least $600-700 if you can find someone willing to do it without rebuilding it.

the torque converter is "used" for ALL motion that the truck does!!!
if you lost rev//and 2nd,,,,,,the sun-shell,, {internal part} is probably
sheared off....which requires R&R

if ya got an aamco near by take it to them....theyre some of the best.....i got mine rebuilt for about 1200.00, though i dunno how much itll be for the sun-gear fix just give them a call

Torque converter wouldn't cause this.
I would look towards the reaction sun gear and shell as the most likey cause of your problem.
A inspection would determine the cause and depending on the type of damage, sometimes a complete rebuild is not necessary.
You can replace the "hard" part that failed and the trans will work fine. No need to replace parts that don't need to be replaced.
If the reaction sun gear and shell is the problem, there is a heavy duty one that can be installed in its place.
Personally, I would stay away from AAMCO

Yes, I have a 96 Tahoe and less than 2 months ago I had torque converter problems. The symptom was slamming when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Luckily the tranny was still under warranty from Chevy so I got my tranny replace for free. It had only been in there for a year. The pump went out the first time, in which I lost all gears at once. It cost me $2400 at the Chevy dealership for the 50,000 mile warranty tranny. Good luck.
