no reverse or second gear

Hey everyone,
I have a 1997 Chevy Tahoe with about 70,000 miles. Recently the reverse gear and the 2nd gear are not working. I had it put on a computer to find out what is wrong with it and it came back with codes for multifunction button/box and the torque converter.
Anyone out there have this problem before and had it fixed? What kind of money am i going to spend?
I am not mechanically inclined but I know a bit.
