Well most are called Chrysler daytona's here in canada for some reason but I was wondering!

I want to purchase my first car. I'm thinking Daytona. They look good and should go a decent speed. i hear IROC R/T are like 0-60 in 6.3 seconds but thats out of my price range.

Can anybody tell me what would be the best to get or if there is any other cheap car that looks just as good?

You could be like me and get a Turismo or a Charger from around the same year, they're pretty fast, faster with a turbo too! They look pretty similar, in my own opinion I like the way they look more than a Daytona, but lots of people hate these cars too so I dunno...

If you click the link in my signature, and then look at the second page of my cardomain page, you can see my 1984 Turismo there. I have an identical 1985 Charger for parts, it's even painted the same and everything. I really like these cars, and they're becoming harder and harder to find. Probably most of them have been crushed by now...

I live in a small town near Vancouver and around here there are Many Daytonas. I have looked at the Charger but am kind of annoyed that they called that kind of car a Charger. Going from the older Muscle to that is pretty bad(even though its a nice car).
Yeah, I have only seen one charger and have never seen a turismo so I will definetly look into those.

Make sure and get an '88 or later if it is Turbo I (non intercooled) or '87 or later if it is Turbo II-(intercooled). Otherwise you're looking at a lot of wiring if you want to improve the motor.

Check out www.thedodgegarage.com and go from there...

These cars have a few quirks, but once overcome with a few choice well placed parts they are very fun to drive.

I agree go with an 88-newer turbo 1 car. They are much easier to mod, and pretty cheap. The real key is finding one with as little rust as possible and with a decent interior.

No rust here in VA on daytonas, the trouble here is keeping the paint on them! (well all chrysler FWD cars!)

I just got back from vacation in the mountains (ok, in VA these are mountains. anywhere else, they're hills...), found a guy out there who has 3 (count 'em) 87-89 shelby chargers, which are all candy apple red with the silver stripe. I didn't stop to make sure they weren't clones, but 3 of 'em, sitting in his driveway (for all 6 six days I was there) one day one was missing, and I found it at the local gas station! My wife had no interest so we didn't stop to talk.Darn! He had some other FWD mopars too, and there was what I thought was a VNT Daytona just up the street for sale, but it turned out to be a 88 Daytona that somebody painted red and put a body kit on. ($2000 was way too much for a N/A 2.2 5 speed car.)

Hmmm.
So what do u guys think are better?
3.0L V6 or a 2.2 turbo?

2.2 turbo by far! There has been a few guys that turbo their V6's, and the internals on the 6 a pretty stout. But 90% of V6's came with an automatice transmission, and they are not so strong!
A stock turbo car is easily upgraded. Just make sure it's an 88-up car (unless you find an 87 T2 car, IE shelby daytona w/MANUAL TRANSMISSION because auto's got the T1 engine) so you have the better intake manifold and a beefier tranny.

Yeah, i heard that if a Daytona has over 200 hp it can be very hard on the tranny. As is with mostly any other front wheel drive car.

I thought the turbo would be better but I was wondering if anyone knows 0-60 for the Daytonas. That should help me decide!

Oh, but contrary to popular belief....

The 3 speed automatic transaxle (absolutely NOT the O.D. "4" speed!!) does hold up quite well when properly maintained and built. (please note that I used the A520 for years and loved it but I did break two of them....)

Not to mention it's bitchin consistent and gives you better reaction times, and a lower ET if you're serious about NHRA drag racing. And I like it on SCCA road courses too, less work driving means more fun racing.

But , hell guys... I'm getting older, so maybe you all are up to jamming gears and breaking input shafts and chewing up output drives. Hmm... that doesn't happen with automatics....

I haven't had the chance to drive a turbo'ed daytona. I do own a V-6 and 0-60 mph times are low 8's. Thats with an automatic transmission. My plans include a complete rebuild, headwork, bore to 0.40 over and maybe even a turbo in the future. Around $1000 for the parts required for a turbo for the 3.0. Finding the parts is the hard part...

I guess for you I recommend just gettin a 2.2 turbo instead. you should be able to find one.
Thats what i'll probably get.
I might just get a 2.2 but in the future when i got more money I'll probably just add turbo to it.

Heh,, neither. I like my 2.5 turbo. 89+ had the same block (hence the name commonblock) between 2.2/2.5, it's essentially a stroked motor.

There's been much debate, but some really fast guys are running 2.5's and the added torque is great for a heavier car like a 'Tona.

As for tranny's, 2.2 T-II Daytonas usually had A-555's in them and it will hold a heck of a lot more than 200 horses.

I personally like my A-413 auto. It's holding quite well to ~200 HP right now, but I'll get a built version of it sometime soon since I'm goin' with an S60 turbo and more boost...

0-60 in 8 seconds? I'm hopin' for 1/8 mile times in the 8's before the end of the year.

My V6 is a work in progress... Hell, if I ever get a job, maybe it will be progressed more than it is now. I'm working torwards a goal of 350 whp with turbo or super... but right now, with funds non-existent, so are those horsies...

Nah...I have enough traction problems with my 2.2 as it is. Plus 2.2's are better for top end performance which really helps out on the street.
The ''fast'' guys that are running 2.5's are running slicks...otherwise a 2.2 will have advantage over a 2.5 on street tires.
A520's can hold good too with the addition of the Chrome Moly transplate. Most say 300 WHP is about the limit, then you need the Getrag gear set to hold up.
