A/C cutting off & on

On my 98 Honda Civic, the a/c cuts on and off on really hot days. It starts out cooling fine, then hot air will blow for about 10-15 minutes, then cool air again. It seems to do this more if I'm driving at slower speeds or idling. I've had it thoroughly checked. There are no leaks, freon charge is fine, fuses are fine - everything seems to be fine. One guy said the a/c cuts off to keep it from freezing up and that is how it's supposed to work, but I've had this car 6 years and it's never done this. I live in Texas where it's around 100 degrees nearly everyday and this is unbearable. I f anyone else has had this problem and resolved it, I would really like to know how.

you know... I went more than crazy checking for my AC problem. I had the same problem. It was something I would never expect. I had it running at idle and all, and I noticed the AC fan outside wasnt running. I pushed it with my finger and it started to spin. The fan istelf was bad and weak and went to a junk yard and bought a motor from a 98 civic. I have a 92. These fan motors can NOT be bought at any local parts stores. Only dealership or junkyards (at least the 92-95's) because they are a flat pankcake style. Heres a good test. Turn the AC on, doesnt matter what speed, run water through the AC radiator with a hose for a few min or as long as you want.... once the water that falls off the radiator is cool, run inside the car and feel the AC. I had a thermometer on my AC vent and it read 27 degrees... I was like "HOLY SHIT! MY CAR NEVER GOT THAT COLD!" I bought the fan the next day and now my car constantly has 29-31 degree air coming out of the AC vents :) I never understood why my car cooled when I was moving. Made perfect sense... when you're moving, air is being pushed into the AC radiator, when you're still, its just heating up to hell. The AC compressor shuts off because the heat rises so much that the pressure inside increases ALOT, causing the pressure switch to cut off the compressor. If you had a professional guage connected to the lines, you'll see how high the pressure gets without proper cooling.

i agree with sageuvagony. check ur fans. if they're not working, check the fuses and if they check out fine, replace the fan. and r u sure that u have enough freon in the car?

Thanks all. It turned out the problem was with the A/C clutch.
