1995 C/K 2500 - Was running just fine - Wife ran it out of gas. When refilled it will barely stay running. Feels like no fuel. Fuel Filter to be changed tomorrow. Anything else I should check before it goes in?

Thanks!

Check the fuel pressure. If you drive around very much with less than a 1/4 tank of gas, the fuel pump is probably bad.

We usually don't go below 1/2 - Truck is not used much '95 and only 25K on it.

It was working just fine - I had driven it a week earlier - plenty of power - no hesitation. She ran it out and it just won't come back. It was a sudden change in performance, (great to none!). I am hoping it is just a gummed up filter - but I never get off that easy. The city just marked a bunch of my elm trees - looks like an expensive week!

Just curious - why does a low gas tank hurt the fuel pump. I did alot of mechanic work in my younger days, now its 100 hour weeks at the day job and my skills have really gone :-(

Thanks!

The fuel pump is lubricated and cooled by the gas in the tank. If the tank gets below 1/4, the pump starts to cavitate, and the overheats.

Thanks - been awhile - I'm not used to the intank pumps - dates me doesn't it!

Swapped out the fuel filter - no luck. Almost smells way rich. Anyway - no time to work on it - off to service it goes.

Thanks for the help!!

Sorry about the delay all - been on the road minus my computer.

Service replaced the fuel pump and I have a new truck. I was unaware how bad it had been running as it appears the fuel pump failure was slow. Running out of fuel evidentually was the final straw and it failed completely.

I will take 95silverado's advice and keep all of my vehicles, (except the wings), between 1/4 and 1/2 from now on! I have since heard from a number of folks that the in-tank fuel tanks don't take kindly to being un-ported from the fuel.

Thanks again!!

The fuel pumps for late model chebbys suck. Been stranded because of this. How did the $400.00 pump feel going down. Crap from the factory.
