how feasible?....TT conversion

ok, i've read a lot of stuff about TT conversions for the base and SL 3000GTs on a bunch of these threads. But does anyone know of someone who is actually done it? If so, how much boost can you run?

What i'm getting at is that since the TT engine has a 8:1 compression ratio, it can obviously take a considerable amount of boost, say 14psi avg, and even upwards of 21 or so. However, the base/SL engine has a 10:1 compression ratio, and therefore how much boost do you think it could handle? I know the limit compression for running pump gas is 10.5:1, so the base/SL engine is pretty high-strung and a very good engine for the hp you get for displacement without variable timing cams.

I've talked to a mechanic friend of mine and he said that slapping on some turbos or even a supercharger wouldn't be such a good idea b/c you could only run low boost, and also you would be breaking half-shafts all the time. As we know the FWD base/SL models just have the 2 dinky half length drive shafts on either side of the transmission. On the other hand, the VR4 has the two front drive shafts as well as the rear drive shaft extending torque to the rear wheels.

So what do you guys think? Is converting a base/SL model to a Twin Turbo or Supercharged setup feasible? How about any possible problems with the motor for running high boost? problems with the half shafts? any other thoughts?

I'll bump this up a bit. If you take a look at some of those threads you'll see information from some who has done it :)

For the best info check out the 3si FWD forced induction section. You should be able to run around 6psi on pump with 10:1. As far as ease, if you have a DOHC engine the VR-4 parts just bolt up.
