SR20DET Smog Advice

It's pretty obvious that an SR20DET won't pass the visual inspection of a smog test, but what I would like to know is will it pass emissions?

Anyone with smog experience with an SR20DET in Cali?

Your Help is Greatly Appreciated :D

I dunno how the visual inspection works, but has anyone tried putting a KA valve cover on an SR?

As for the chemical part of the test, you have to lean out the mixture at idol. You do this by retarding the timing a little. If you can find a shop that will work with you and crank the Cam Pos. Sensor counter clockwise until the hydrocarbons start to go down. I got mine below ten when I did this.

put on the cat and go take the test.

the only thing you should be concerned about is NO levels. if you dont pass all stock, hook up an afc and dump it rich at least +30% (yes, you heard me right. RICH. you are dumping the exhaust with fuel, thus cooling down the temperature and lowering your NO level).

Isnt there something about car exemptions from smog tests?

yeah, if you have obdII (cars 96+) then a smog test will be done by digital diagnostics.

Yo thats a smart idea, try swapping a KA valve cover on an SR20.
Question, how do you fail the visual, is it that the color of the V-cover is diff, or is it just cuz you swapped another engine, I don't get it.
And can you fail a visual for having powder coated stuff and chrome under the hood??????????

The smog stations know what they are looking for. There isnt an EGR on an SR20DET, failed right there. They can see the turbo, no CARB NO., fail. Most stations know the engine that went in the car, and have books to tell what it looks like and locations of the engine code. You wont pass the visual, regardless of the disguise. Just find a shop that doesnt care, they are out there.

i am quite interested by this thread. my brother has a sr20det s15 in his s14 95 240 and the only reason they failed him for inspection is because his ball joint was bad and his lower arm was bent for his front wheel. i could be wrong though.
