After-run coolant circulation

Had my '97 Passat GLX checked out recently and was advised that a pump that circulates coolant after the engine has been shut off needs to be replaced. I've never heard of this on any other car I've owned. Since this car has over 100K miles, I'm reluctant to put money into for repairs that might be optional. Can anyone advise if I'll be causing serious damage if I don't replace this pump? I live in a very moderate climate if that makes any difference.

the part can be bought for $107.62 at germanautoparts.com...I believe it's not too difficult to change. Get a Bentley manual for VW and follow the diagram. The manual can be bought on CD or in paperback--it'll pay for it self in no time at all if you do your own repairs. If you need A/C info, get the CD version. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I'll try to get my hands on a Bentley manual. I do my own work on my oldie American cars but haven't attempted anything on the past couple of German cars I've used as daily drivers, but if it's easy enough I'll give it a shot.
