stiff shift linkage

I have a 1994 escort with a 5 sp manual. The shift linkage has become very stiff. Is there any way to lube the linkage? The tranny shifts Ok, it just requires more effort to move the stick around.

Thanks for your help.

I don't have an answer but am having the same, or a similar problem. It's a manual transmission. Side to side is OK but forward and back is stiff and difficult to move. It shifts fine. I suspect some sort of bushing. I did open the where the boot covers the linkage assembly. I was able to lubricate a ball socket where the shifter is seated but it had no effect. Beyond that I can't really tell where to go. Anyone have any suggestions?

I used white lithium grease in the ball socket joint under the boot. I filled it several times and let it seep through overnight. The squeak I had went away and the shifting got easier. It may be bushings, but this coulod be an easy fix.

I had a similar issue with my 93 GT 1.8L/5spd. Follow the shift linkage to where it meets the trannsmission. The bushing that goes around the shaft that enters the tranny was completely gone on mine. I didn't want to take the time to go to the dealer to order a new bushing, so I used a couple of leftover swaybar bushings off my old Mustang. Not only does my shifter feel more firm, but it got rid of a very annoying rattle.
