Coolant Problem

Hey guys got a ? for you. Over the past couple of days I've noticed my camaro has been running alot warmer than normal. I know its hypo'd so it should run warmer but it got all the way up to 225, normally it runs close to 200. Anyway I took the thermostat out of it this afternoon and it still got up to 210, so I took the old clutch fan off and put the electric off of the 88 and it still was running close to 200 but I noticed that when I stopped at the gas station and got back out to the car it had actually cooled off abit. So it seams that when I'm driving it will run warmer than it does just sitting there idling. Any one have any Ideas ? I'm planning on putting a new water pump on tomorrow even though the old one seemed fine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Guys

maybe something to do with your front bumper... or the spoiler... there was a similar thread a while back that turned out to be the problem

check to see if theres anything blocking the airflow... leaves, plastic bags etc (i guess 89 coulda posted this, ive seen him post it a few times lol)

No there isnt anything blocking the front of the radiator, I checked that out while I was putting the electric fan in it. I also plan on flushing the radiator out when I put the new water pump on. One of the guys at autozone told me that he thinks it might be a cracked head but I havent had any oil or coolant loss and I dont see any water in the oil so I think he might be pulling my leg there on that one.

Yeah if there are no bubbles in the coolant then I think the heads and gaskets are fine. Higher RPM=more combustion=more friction=hotter temps. I had a '77 T/A 400 BB that acted the same way. It could idle all day in 100 degree weather and be fine but you take it down the highway at 80 and she starts climbing on the temp gauge. Could be the pump. GL.

Well see thats where I'm confused because its never done this. Its always ran pretty much under 200, its just started this like 4 days ago. It scared the shit out of me when it got up there around 225. Thats why I thought it was the thermostat and took it out but for it to still get up to 200 w/o the thermostat in around 4 miles is scary. I mean it didnt really climb up after that but I also stopped at the gas station to get a snack.....LOL

you might have the right idea with it being a gunked up radiator, i would try flushing it. drain the radiator, take a hose and spray it down into the radiator. it aint the best way of flushing a system, but it'll help more than doing nothing at all...

did you change the water pump? did it lower the temp?

If you took your thermostat right out and it still got up to over 200, than ide say you have a problem with coolant flow.. Do you still have your air damn in placE?? (not the chin spoiler, its a black plastic lip that sits beneath the rad and hangs down) Check for pinched or collapsed rad hoses.. Also, let the car warm up, and make sure that both your upper and lower rad hoses are hot, and that both of your heater hoses (inlet and return hose) get hot..
While the engine is running and warmed up, squeeze the upper rad hose closed for a couple seconds.. You should feel pressure build up a little bit, then when you let go, it should surge through..

Ive always heard that taking the thermostat out doesnt help much because it doesnt slow the coolant down enough for it to take heat out of the engine.
