Hi all;
i just put a 1980 267 small block in my 1970 k-10 just to get it to another place cause im in the middle of a move, and the truck has been in my family since it was new. I changed the intake to a edelbrock performer, because the stock manifold was so full of smog it would have cost me a mint to plug all the holes. it also has a edelbrock 600cfm carb, the motor only has 67,000 miles on it and i only had to pay a hundred bucks for it, sounded good to me for a temp motor. ok heres the problem,in nuetral engine runs great good pick up no miss no shack nothing smooth as glass. but when I put it in gear and try to go its like Ive got the emergencey brake on,no power ,its timed about 6 degrees before tdc. i got the vacume advance running off the drivers side of the carb,if i put it on the pass side it backfires through intake. oh yeah, I know its something I did cause i know the car it came out of and it ran real sweet. if anyone can help with some suggestions or ideas of what can be wrong thanks in advance :sunglasse

Sounds like timing to me. Alittle too advanced would be my guess. Just turn the distributor alittle one way by hand and test drive to see if it is better or worse. You can do a very good job with timing by just doing it like this. On older engines the balancer can slip because most are riding on a rubber ring which will give you incorrect readings for timing. My guess on that engine would be to turn the distributor clockwise about 5 degrees and then see how it runs.

what tranny is in it, if its an automatic make sure you don't have the torq. conv. jammed in wrong (didn't get pushed in all the way and was crushed when you tightended the tranny down). I know I've done that one before :-(
also replace all the vac. lines just the slightest cracs will let it suck air and seem like its starving for gas no matter what your timing is set at.
being a 1980 is it a gudra-jet 4 brl or a rochester 2 brl carb. If its a rochester put a little jb weld or seal-all around the base of the vac. tube. They had a tendincy to crack and suck air not allowing the vac. advance to work on the dist.

timing should be at 8 btdc for stock for power 10 btdc. ps they are gutless to start off with. seeing it came out of a light car to a heavy chev you won't get to much power out of it.

the engine will last a long time, tried to blow one up doing 70mph in first gear it would blow it did act weird later but it still ran.
