Well my order came from Hobby Link Japan yesterday. :D:D:D (a Lancer Evo V and a R34 Skyline. No pics b/c every one here knows what the Skyline kit looks like because they own one!) :)
I'm stopping by the model shop on the way home to buy all my paints, some sandpaper and maybe carbon fibre decals.
Here's a pic of the box. The instructions say to paint it red, but I'm going to paint it Gloss White which means I can't use many of the tuner decals. (I guess I could put them on my ITR)
http://www.hlj.com/images/fuj/fuj04045box.gif
I have a couple of questions already: 1) Do I need primer for a white car that is molded in white. 2) How many coats of primer and paint should I need (I did 0 primer and 4 paint for my ITR). 3) What is this polish that every one mentions and I how do I acquire and use it?
Other than that, expect me to move very quickly on this model. By the end of today, I should have the first coat of primer/paint on it.
Oh, btw, I'm going to have to scan the instructions for you guys. The illustrations on what NOT to do are too funny (i.e. not opening window while spray painting!)

well
I use the tamiya polish/rubbing combound that comes in a tube, your local shop should have them in stock
Mitsu decals on a ITR, that'll be WEIRD
Beside from the decals and the wheels, anything special about this kit?
Hope to see pics of it soon. Enjoy your new toys:)

I was talking about the tuner decals. (Brembo, Recaro, etc...) I'd never put Mitsu decals on an ITR. :silly2: Special... special... Well it come with all the parts for the RS and the GSR. I'm making the GSR of course. I didn't really buy it for the Tohge stuff. I just wanted an Evo V and this kit came with nice wheels and looked good.

How about a Teg Evo Type R :D :D :D
The RS would look much more racing style, but a fully loaded GSR...who can resist;)

Here's the addy of a website that I'll no doubt be using very frequently for this model.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V - Styling (http://www.mitsubishi-motors.co.jp/EVO5/style.html)
I definitely like the GSR look much more, but I want that white that's on the RS. The RS has really gaudy wheels! :apuke: I'm going to use the included O-Z Super Tourismo wheels and not the stock GSR wheels (even tho both are included. The GSR wheels are much smaller (15 or 16's)

I'm back from the model shop! (how often do I say that?) :silly2:
I met the owner today. Even tho I'm in the SE USA he speaks with a Kiwi or Australian accent (calling the hood, the bonnet and the trunk, the boot!) It's weird hearing that, but it's pretty cool. He really knows his stuff and got me all my stuff. I got 1000, 1200 and 2000 grit sand paper and more spraypaint. I'm going to attempt to spray paint the interior this time. :)
I've looked over the kit and it seems to be very well done. The instructions are very brief, but they are no less clear. There is no flash on the body and a little on some of the medium size parts, but that was easily removed.
I'm trying to find a box to keep my model in while its paint dries so I can't strart on anything right now. I think I'm going to use a copy paper box since it has a lid. After I find one:
I'll wash, sand, wash, paint, paint, paint, glue, glue, cut, scream, curse, scream, bandage, glue, picture, picture, gallery, stare.
I'm excited, expect more soon!

I was thinking about that, but the guys at the model shop said that since the model is molded in white that it would be alright. 3 or 4 coats of paint should do it. I'm using Tamiya Pure White. (TS-26, I believe). The other option was racing white, but that's closer to ivory (sorta off-white). I want to capture the Scotia White of the real thing.
Oh, I got a big sheet of carbon fiber decals. It's probably 5x8 inches. It looks black at first, but if you look close you can see the hatches. It supposed to 1/24 scale. They even have 1/25, 1/30 and 1/10 scale. I'm going to use it for the hood of my R34 Skyline. I'm also going to paint the seats in both cars red.
I do have one gripe with the kit. The racing seats have no holes for the harness. Instead there are just little depressions. I'm going to have to cut the holes out, but the plastic is thick there. :(
Other than that, the kit matches the pictures and GT2/3 (one of the best references) perfectly.

I'd still go for a light coat of primmer on the body

Here are the warnings from the instructions. Some of the No-No's include licking parts (which could be poisonous), not paying attention to what you are doing, not reading the instructions and painting in a small, unventiliated area.
The instruction text is pretty funny too:
Take care not to cut your finger, hand or foot when handling a nipper, knife or file, etc.
I guess I shouldn't model in open-toed sandals anymore! :silly2:

Today's progress: I acquired copy paper box and plastic bag to cover up the holes. I washed all the parts in lukewarm, mildly soapy water going over each surface and rinsing. I sanded the body with 2000 grit sand paper just enough to knock off the shine. Repeated washing and rinsing with body and finally I placed all parts in copy paper box to air dry.
Tomorrow I apply the first coat on Pure White (TS-26) to the body and Matte Black (TS-6) to the interior.

Well, by the time I got home, it was already dark out so I didn't have to time to do any spraying. Instead, I masked the interior. See below...
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/603550maskedint.jpg
It was a real pain at first and I wasted a lot of tape, but now i've gotten the hang of it. The masking isn't perfect, so I'll definitely have to go back and do some touchup, but it seems to work.
I also have gone back and have done a more thorough job sanding the body. I sanded the spoiler (deck and wing) and metal parts. I cut up a small piece of the sand paper (still 2000 grit) and wrapped it around my tweezers to sand in some small spaces. Going back I spotted a few more mold lines than I saw before.
I've also noticed how spartan the interior is. Besides the dash and all the equipment for driving (insruments, pedals, radio) there is hardly any detail. The doors don't even have arm rests. HOWEVER, going over the outside it is obvious that a lot of attention to detail has been put in.
Tomorrow I have a photography assignment, so I might not be able to spray but who knows. At the latest, I should be able to spray on Wednesday before going to church.

Well, two days have gone by and I have been unable to work on my model on either day. :(
Yesterday (Feb. 5), I had a photography assignment that took until dusk and today it is cold and rainy (30 F). I guess I might go ahead and rinse some of the most recently sanded parts and do some more masking. On the plus side I picked up Flat Red (XF-7) to do the racing seats. They will be part flat black and part flat red. Hopefully tomorrow I can do the first coat, but who knows. Let's hope and pray. :D
Edit: Here is a really crappy rendering (that means I did it myself) of what the seats will look like. :silly2:

Primer isn't there to match colours of plastic or make dark colours light, it is there to 'grip' the paint to the surface of the model and to mask any scratches, be they from the sandpaper or deeper from a file.
Don't use primer and you will regret it, simple as that!
A pro could probably prep a body for use without primer, but what's the point! Primer is there for that purpose.
Give the body a coat or two of primer and stop ignoring the good advice we dish out! You can use that 2000 grade to LIGHTLY smooth the primer after it has cured.
You wouldn't want to ruin that lovely kit now would you?

Sorry, man. I'm tapped out now for models. In fact the $2.05 for the XF-7 was all coins. I got no more money to buy primer. Tell ya what, though. For my Skyline, not only will I spary paint 95%, I will use primer. I just know so little about modelling. Do I put primer on every surface to be painted, or just spray painted or what. I just don't know. This is only my second kit!

Before I post anymore, let me say this. Thank you, guys. I'm really glad you're willing to put up with my questions and idiocy (all the way up to witch slap, of course) ;)
I do have a question. What should the underside of the car be painted. Should it be black or white and should it be flat or gloss. I'm guessing flat white, but I don't know.
I also noticed this last night when I was painting the tail pipe. It calls for a paint H8 (Hasegawa paints). This color is not mention in the kit as being required, but it is essential. It's used on the tailpipe, mirrors and several smaller parts. I believe it is either chrome or silver. Fortunately, I had silver left from my ITR, and I used that. Right now, the tailpipe, rotors, brake disks, and springs and steering wheel are painted. I really like the Momo steering wheel, but it's soooo hard to paint it like it looks in real life. Pic below.

We slap because we care. :)
Car undersides are usually painted the same color as the body, but unfinished, usually left with no polishing or clear coats for a semi-gloss look. Do the same for your models.

Thanks turbos86! That's what I thought. I looked at the box and it actually has that as a paint required, but the instructions don't have it. Go fig! :silly2:
Right now I have two base coats on the body with NO BUBBLES, let me say that again.... NO BUBBLES! The interior has 1.5 coats and a few small bubbles, but they are easily sanded. I'm excited! With 3 or 4 more good sunny days like this I might very well be finished! I'll keep you guys posted! ;)
I also have two copy paper boxes turned upside down to store my Evo. I have one that has my spray painted stuff in it and one that has my hand painted stuff in it. It seems to be working because there is significantly less crud on the body when I go back to put on extra-coats of paint.

Well, I peeled back the Tamiya masking tape on the interior this morning and it is as I suspected. The majority of it looks untouched, while there are a few places where the flat black bled in. Mostly in the seams. I now have to mask the windows and windshield to begin spraying those. I have most of the suspension painted as well as the the underbody. With any luck the underside and the interior will be finished tonite. I will also be adding another coat of paint to the Evo body today b/c it's warm and the sun is shining. Pics to follow!

I found out while putting the suspension together that the wheels can turn!! :D The interior is mostly finished. I have to glue everything down, paint the door frame and do a little touch up. I also have to decal the speedo, tach, odo, and the recaro seat thingys. The body has recieved the last coat of spray paint and it looks much better than my ITR. Not much longer yet.

Check it out! Now the interior is done and the suspension! I've placed all the finished parts on top of one another for the photo (no glue!). The rest is just windows, lights and grill. How long should I let the body dry before I do anything with it?

This rubbing compound. When do I use it? Do I put on the decals first and then put it on. How long should I wait after I attach everything to the body?

Wait a week and then the first thing you do is cut back the body with the compound.
Careful now, you don't want to see the primer again! Go easy on this one and under polish it so you don't get dis-heartened!
Think of the cutting back as cleaning your teeth! You put decals on and all you will do is scrub them off again!
They go on after the cutting and polishing!

After polishing, DO NOT use model cement to attach anything. It will melt the paint so fast, you won't even believe! Use white glue like Krystal Klear, or super glue, but be very careful with super glue, too, it's not much better...

So you're saying I should go ahead and attach the spoiler and then polish? What about the silver I want to paint behind the headlights. Should I not polish there b/c it will go through (that and I'm sure it's shiny enough) :) Here's the bottom line: Is this some kind of paste? If so, how do I apply it? With a new toothbrush or what? Thanks.

Edit: I just realized that came out bad, so here is the translation of the above garbled Nihongo.

Okay, I've finished spraying the windows and my masking worked excellently... except for one thing. The spray paint carried over and got stuck to the outside of the glass. :o However, it collected in such a manner that when placed in the correct setting, it looks just like tinting. Another one of my screwups turns out better than if I had done it on purpose. :D
Nearly ruined some decals for the license plate, but they were repaired. I have questions. One is what does the the below picture mean? The mesh shown is actual mesh with holes and whatnot. What should I glue it with? Superglue? I've never seen that symbol next to all of the mesh before. I also would like to know if I should cut it out exactly like the picture shows. The lower bit with showing the pattern is exactly the size of the mesh sheet. I really just want to confirm that.

i normally use superglue for this stuff, use it sparingly and be cautious with it - remember its mesh, with holes in! Which means u could get glue on your fingers which in turn means that it usually gets onto your newly painted bodywork!!! To check any sizes and fitting use the template to cut out test pieces in paper - trace the shapes onto the paper then cut out that way u wont end up wasting any mesh. U could also use those same templates to arrange a more econominal way to cut out your mesh so that u can save some for your spares box.

If you have any Kristal Klear, use that. It wont spoil the paint if any does run through onto the outside paint work as you can wash it off with water if it does.
It dries clear so you dont see it.

Well, I've been PM'ing Jay and I've made a lot of progress. I put on the mesh without major incident (thanks flyonthewall and Warren!). I also put on pretty much all the parts I could that I could polish and do other stuff with. I don't have the money for Tamiya Compound right now (1 week!). Here are the pics as the model stands. I need to put the decals on, the windshield wipers, blue the windows to the body and put on the license plates.

Superb!
Too many kits are started on this site and never finished, so nice to see you are almost there!
Make sure you do the window rubbers, and I recommend matt black automotive paint or Tamiya paint for this. I am very pleased with the results on my Calsonic Skyline.
Look forward to seeing it done, the wheels are awesome!
Don't rub through that paint when you polish it!

Yeah, the stuff that I have on there now is the stuff that can either be removed or polished. I have a really fine tip pin .1 mm for the seams but are you saying that I should mask and spray to get that sill? I know that I should NOT hand paint it. It looks like CRAP! Can you tell me what I should do?

General Modelling* Situation:
I got my Blue Nissan Skyline GTR R34 ChoroQ in today from HobbyLink. That was cool. It's so much fun just like the box said (see signature!). I spent my my modelling money from my paycheck on Saturday getting paints for my Tamiya Nissan Skyline R34 GTR. I've decided that it will be metallic black with a carbon fiber hood. But here's the catch. I'm going to chop it up and use putty to make it look like a Nismo hood. I'm also going to take out the turnsignal lights on the front and the indention for the license plate in the front. Still scrounging for money for the putty. Pray to God that it works! :) I did get PRIMER , repeat: I got PRIMER . I also got Tamiya Compound for my Integra and Lancer and boy oh boy does it look good.

Here are some updated pictures!
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/684863doctored.jpg A little doctoring on this one, but look at the great reflections.

Okay so it doesn't have anything to do with polish, but it looks cool don't it?
* I spell modelling with two L's. It's perfectly acceptable according to Webster's so deal with it! :silly2:
