Hi Guys
Whilst working on the 1:12 Skyline I want to add some weld detail to things like the exhausts, IC, and other parts.
Can I hear you ideas for creating realistic looking welds.
My only idea is putty and carve them in but other ideas are welcome
Thanks in advance

With a small brush lay down a line of silver paint wher you want the weld line, wait until the silver paint is almost dry and make the weld marks with the tip of a small screwdriver, then let the siver paint to dry completely.

try a different color paint and dab them on.

for instance if you are painting the intercooler w/ aluminum try using some steel on the tip of a fine paintbrush and do one of those "dab and push and dab and push" (hard to explain). Use a thick paint, nothing too thin.

The color choices were only for example, getting the coloring right will be up to you. Hope that helps a bit, if only to give you a different method to experiment with.

let us know what you come up with!

Here's a tutorial:

There are a couple methods I know of. The first is in FOTW's intercooler how to, and it works quite well. The thin line of putty, laid over the seam, then textured with a soft paintbrush. It may, however, be better to use a knife blade to "carve" the texture in the soft putty on such a large scale. You could even make a tool by filing PE fret, at that scale.

The other way I know, but haven't been able to get to work right uses plaine white glue. Tak the bottle of glue, and run a bead of it along the seam. Do it like you would ice a decorateive trim on a cake, squeeze some out, and push it back, move the bottle forward, squeeze some out, push it back.... make any sense? The reason I could never do it was because it was hard to get the tiny amount of glue needed for 1:24. It might work for 1:12, though. Be mindful, white glue shrinks as it dries, it may take some experimentation, but the good part is if it doesn't work, it comes off easily.

Fly On The Wall had a neat way of doing it using a bit of rolled putty and a paintbrush, If you check the Tutorial section he shows it under the Intercooler Tut.

you can just use some chrome silver paint, and paint a thick line to simulate a weld , i use that for exhaust headers and it works great,
also you could use white glue and apply it with a toothpick, then paint it after
another way is to put a light coatof liquid cement, and then stabb it repeatedly with broken tip X-Acto blade

The putty method sounds great if you need texture, and in modeling that type of texture equals detail, especially on a 1/12 scale.

I used 5 minute epoxy on my Ducati by mixing the A and B components and waiting til it got tacky then I stuck a toothpick in it, pulled it out so that the epoxy was 'stringy' and wrapped it around the exhaust.

Then you can paint it however you want.

I use very thin styrene rod. Cut or scrape a small line in or around the part then glue a very small styrene rod into the groove. Glue the rod in place using a liquid glue such at MEK or tamiya very thin cement. After it dries coat it heavily with more cement and use a tothpick or old brush to make the dimples you see in welding. Here is a link to a 1/24 scale muffler from a Hasegawa Lancia 037 I built a few years ago.
