I have a 93 cherokee country edition, that wont start. It cranks, but acts like the battery is about dead. The volt meter inside shows 9, but when I put two different meters on the battery, they both showed near 13 volts. This has happened once before, but magically healed itself and started a week later. I recently blew out a gasket on the oil filter housing and the starter inherited several dozen quarts of oil. A buddy seems to think the brushes in the starter are soaked, and are not good. I need help.

I am also a newbie to this forum and also have a 93 Cherokee with starting problems. Been reading through the archives here and from what I can tell for being such a rugged vehicle Jeep Cherolee is a big baby when it comes to starting problems... Many owners have gone through replacing just about every sensor from stem to stern and still have problems. I had the battery & charging system tested & both passed with flying colors.
Most common problem seems to be the flywheel sensor. Mounted on the bell housing with a magnetic sensor that picks up movement of the flywheel telling the computer the engine is turning over so it can activate all the various relays associated with starting the engine. Starter, fuel pump etc.
I've had my Cherokee for just over a year. Changed the flywheel sensor and solved most of the problem but I still have an occasional problem someplace. Replaced relays and still the same old crank but not start... Tapping on the relays or even just tapping the fuse box often helps but is annoying as hell when in a hurry. The other two big common problems I've seen in archives is coil that fails one or more various tests usually HV test or a bad neutral switch. I plan to have the coil on my big baby tested next. If you find any other solutins let me know.

I have a 93, Sometimes it won't start either. Does anyone have an anti-theft system on theirs? I was wondering if it was factory or added on. I think my problem is related to that.

If you try to start and sometimes nothing happens - and when you jiggle on the shifter it starts - it is most likely nuetral safety switch (NSS). Another problem you may see with this is that your backup lights don't work either. Try this link and it could save you a ton of money ($300).

It takes you thru step by step the process of cleaning your NSS - I fixed mine about 8 months ago and acts like brand new and the back up lights work now too.
I hope this helps - Good Luck!
