i recently (friday night) totalled my camaro w/ four of my friends in the car, running from a cop for going through a stop sign. i'm being charged with running form a police officer, 4 cases of reckless endangerment, and something else. i am only 17. there were no other cars in the accident, and noone was seriously injured. I NEED HELP. i go to court august 9th at 9 in the morning. i am nervious as hell. anything i can do to help myself in court? i've never been, and i don't have any clue as to what i should do. my mom is hiring a lawyer for me. anything i can do to possibly get the charges reduced? any help is seriously appreciated.

Get johnny cochran! Ask them if there is anything you can do to lower the charges. Getting them dropped i highly doubt it. Good luck laws very state to state hope ur not in texas because your ass would have been grass (experience just from a speeding ticket and bad as hell for me because of my state law) TEXAS is hell!

First of all... What in the HELL were you running from the cops for? Was it that serious to risk your life, your friends lives, or even worse, that innocent family driving home from bible study? Worse case scenario besides stiff fines, community service, is going to jail or possibly getting sued by your friends (or their parents if they're minors).
Secondly... Do you have a criminal background? If you don't than maybe you and your attorney could convinced the judge that you were just being stupid (which you were) and maybe scared. Only a GOOD attorney and a GOOD judge can get you out of this situation. Good luck!! You're gonna need it!!!

thanks guys. i am only 17, still a minor, and i had three friends with me that were minors, 14,15,16,m and a friend that was 18. i was so fucking scared about getting another ticket. i honestly don't know what the hell i was thinking. i don't have a criminal background, and the only things on my license are: a ticket for no front plate, a speeding ticket, and a ticket for not being able to stay in the lines - i totaled my dad's truck earlier this month - i fell asleep. i have court in 1 week, now. i hope that my attorney is very good. i hope that the charges can be lowered, i know that i cannot ge them dropped. i'm very scared, though. i'm trying to get information on what other people think may happen, so i have some sort of idea of what i'm up against when i go there. also, what do u guys think i will be asked? i've never been to court, or seen a trial other than the staged ones on tv. thanks

The other posts are generally correct. You need to find a good lawyer with experience in this and follow their advice. Likely there will be no trial, as there is no doubt you did what you did. Your lawyer will likely swing a deal, reduce your conviction/penalty in exchange for not tieing up the courts.
Now, I am no expert, but you need to be concerned about how this will affect your future. The most important thing is to aviod a criminal conviction. A criminal record affect you for years, especially in terms of finding employment and more harsh treatment by the courts if you get into trouble later in life.
Likely those 'reckless endangerment' charges are criminal. The courts will do this, charge you with everything possible with the expectation that some, but not all will stick in court.
Therefore, if you can get the charges reduced to traffic violations, plead guilty to those. You will have to pay a big fine, you will lose your licence for quite a while and an insurance company will want a whopping premium when you start driving again.
But it's better than a criminal conviction which would get you all of this PLUS probation and a record.
Good luck.

say bye bye to that license. the nicest thing would be to revoke it. one thing you forgot to mention though, how many violations did you get tagged with while fleeing and eluding from the LEO's? if the cop didnt hit you with a felony fleeing and eluding, you will probably get off with probation since your a minor.... but you still should lose your license for being an idiot.

i got charged with running from the officer, i think (his handwriting wasn't the neatest), something else, and 4 cases of reckless endangerment. the officer took my license at the scene of the accident, and i did not get it back. i don't care if i get it back, to be honest. the only thing that i care about is that my friends didn't get seriously hurt or killed, and except for a few cuts & bruises, everyone is alright. that's all that matters to me now.

holy shit, don't mean to be rude but you're a fucking retard. running from the cops for running a stop sign is total idiocy...that's only a fine. if it's something like wreckless driving then i can see doing that (hell...i did once) but not with other people in the car.
that being said, let the lawyer do his job...there's pretty much nothing you can do. in court, the judge will probably ask you to explain your side of the story. best thing you can do is talk to your lawyer about what to expect and what to do. if he knows what he's doing, he'll be able to help.
and you can pretty much forget about driving yourself anywhere for at least a year.

very stupid. Since running a stop sign is very minor IF u would of pulled over u may have only gotten a warning...u might not of even gotten a ticket and if you woulda then it would of only been like like $100 at the most...maybe even less then that!

what you did was wrong but at least your not 18. Sometimes stuff like this goes off your record in a few years, not positive. It would be worse off for you if you were 18.

Your attorney should have gotten it dismissed right then. Can't believe that he did not make a motion for dismissal.

could he really have made a move to get all of the charges dropped? cause if so, i'm going to ask him wtf he didn't do that. he charges $200/hour - it's insane. & he just went on vacation - so my first appearance got moved from 8/19 to 8/31. the day after i go back to school. can't wait

you can always write a letter to the courthouse and make a plea for mercy from the judge. as funny as it sounds, it works; if you write a letter of SINCERE APOLOGY to the county, the state, and even the police officer who's life you endanger, you run a better chance of getting yoru charges reduced.
To me, if a kid with no record ran from a cop, and then wrote a long letter of apology; helping me to understand, that HE understands the effects of his actions, and that he is truly undersanding and remorseful of the danger that he posed to the state, and its citizens, then he has been at least somewhat rehabilitated, and would deserve a reduction in his punishment.
Our judicial system is, and always has been, based upon the notion that you are judged by your peers, not a simple rulebook that says 'this is what you did, this is your punishment'. There is always a minimum and maximum penalty for any offense, but nearly anything can be done in a court of law, as long as the state agrees, and the defendant agrees. - how do you think celebrities get away with the things they get away with?
