I just got a '97 Pathfinder SE. The stereo is just the stock system with 6 speakers (2 dash, 2 front doors and 2nd row rear doors-not bose). The speakers in the rear doors are blown and need replacing. Do the grills pop off to enable access to the speakers or do the interior door pannels have to come off to get to them? I haven't had time to get the service manual and I don't want to go "prying around" with a screwdriver or take the pannels off for no reason. Thanks

I haven't bought any replacements yet. I wasn't really planning on replacing them with the exact speakers that are blown, I was just going to look for something that would work. Worse case scenario I can get a guy who does electronic repair at the music store I used to work at to order me raw speakers from a place that sells parts for sound equiptment repair.

how do you safely remove the door pannel? I see the screw in the arm rest and in the dorr handle and I'm assuming those need to come out but what next? do you have to shift the pannel one way or another?

I had a blown speaker in the front door of my 94 pathy. I have the Chilton's, but that was relatively useless. This site really helped a LOT.

I used a 4 ohm speaker from radio shack, close out $7.00. It sounds fine. I can not tell a difference at all. Had to jimmy some wire connectors with $2 worth of connectors from Pep Boys, but I'm sure they have the same thing at the hardware store for even less. so $9.00 for replacing the speaker was a total deal. It took about a half hour (plus the 9 hours I spent going to different stores, on hold with the stupid dealer, the $20 for the chilton's manual, GOOD TIMES!).

what did you use to pry the pannel off once you got all the screws extracted? my fear is bending or tearing the pannel or breaking one or some of the ten clips. thanks for the info

I used a flat head screw driver. On my 1994, there is a circle of plastic at the base of the clip where it attaches to the panel. Put the blade of the screw driver in there and the pressure is on the clip, not on the door panel.
I was worried about breaking them too. But they are good clips, with an area to compress/expand as they pass into the metal of the door, not those cheap clips with the circles of plastic around the circumference that break as they go into the door. None of them broke.
