intake manifold

On my 351, the egr plate has been welded closed (it has a carb, the end facing the firewall) and most of the vacuum hoses have been plugged. All that remains are the essentials i guess, brake booster, vacuum advance, couple others that im not sure of. Would i be better off getting an aftermarket intake, do they make 'em that do away with all the extra vacuum stuff and egr plate? The engine is stock with 4 barrel carb.

Theres also a little flap thing that goes on the intake, dirver side, beside valve cover, it has a flap that sits in the intake and controls flow of something, well it has been removed also, just a plate covering hole up.

So basically my question is, since everything has been removed, do i need to bother with getting a different manifold. If so, what kind would you recommend. It would be a street application with a stock 351ho. Thx for all your help, sorry so long!!!!!!!!

Do you have to get a new intake manifold... no. Will a different one improve performance... yes!

A Performer series intake from Edelbrock would probably be a nice choice.

performance gain i should say.

I've never personally used the Performer but from what I hear it is a nice investment for mild engines. It is intended for use from idle - 5500 rpms.

I'd change the intake manifold and carb(if stock motocraft). It definetly makes a very nice difference in performance on a stock motor.

You could easily find an intake, and more than likely there wouldn't be a problem, but sometimes you get screwed. So with that said, I would go new since they aren't extremely expensive.

Thing with a used intake manifold is some could have cracked it just a lil bit from overtightening. It could have overheated and warped and now needs to be machined. These are all things you really can't tell from the naked eye. So it really is buyer beware on this one.

Seems pretty reasonable to me!

I would suggest Edelbrock's Performer intake, and a Edelbrock 500cfm Performer carb. You should expect to spend around $250 for a carb and about $150 for an intake. Good luck.

???? :screwy: What was I thinking? Stop listening to me. Listen to 351.... I was thinking that it was a late model, like in his avatar. Like he said, go edelbrock performer. Geeez.... :banghead:

600 cfm is gonna be too much for your motor as stock as it is. If you spin the motor as high as 5500 rpms then you will need something around 550cfm. Although I doubt you want to spin a stock motor with a 3.5" stroke and nearly 6" rods (5.955" actually) up to 5500rpms. If you spin it to say 4500rpms you will need something around 450cfm. I would suggest a Performer series 500cfm carb.
Those cfm numbers are just quick math and dont always hold true, but they are close. One of the biggest problems with modified carb'd engines is people thinking the bigger the carb the better. You may be fouling plugs left and right with that 600 up there. If driveability is your main concern I would not suggest a 600cfm carb.
I'm building a wicked 351 right now and only going with a 750cfm Demon.

that would explain my black plugs (after about 3 days) and prob my smoke, lol. do you have any idea on the jet size i would need? thx for all your help!!!!

by the way, yes drivability is my main concern. yes i'll be offroading, but i want to be able to drive it around town and stuff too.

Way off. Its a '65. Just has a Boss 429 scoop on it so it will throw you off a little. No I'm not sure about your jet size, you shouldnt have to change anything if you get the Edelbrock carb I was talking about. Good luck.
