Are the stock rear amps that bad?

I'm looking through crutchfield and I'm pretty tempted on a regular CD deck along with the OEM amplifier adapter unit they recommend along with it ($50).
I've read that I'll fry the deck if I don't use the stock amp. and try to hook up directly to the stock speakers.
So, I'm thinking of just using the stock amps with the adapter. I'm not a bass thumper, I just want to add CD capabilities to my car and still have some pretty decent sound.
Does this sound like a good idea or do you guys have better ones within a budget of $200? ($150 for deck + $50 for adapter)
Thanks.

Dunno why you couldn't get a deck to power your speakers and skip the oem amp. Never heard anything about a head unit blowing. If you wired directly to your speakers, you would prob have to buy wire but I'm not sure which way would sound better because I'm not familiar w/ the P10 sound system.

get the converter. the speakers are 2 ohm models in the P10. it would fry your headunit due to the fact that they are supposed to be ran at 4 ohms. that is the equvilent of have a 4 ohm stable bass amp and trying to run it at 2 ohms-> you'll either blow the fuse or fry the amp.

I think the sound systems setup is similar to the P10 if not the same in the P11

Would it be possible to just run the RCA outs to wires that connected to the factory amps? I have not been able to figure out if the signal from the RCA pre-outs are strong enough to send to the factory amps.
If that works, there would be no reason to buy the convertor. Just go to Radio Shack and buy some RCA female jacks, solder wires to them, plug the RCA preouts into the female jacks, connect the wires + and - correctly to the factory amp inputs and Voila'!
Just a thought I have been working on since March of last year and still have no idea if it will work without any issues.

Thats a really good q. put in the factory head and find out how much power it puts out to see if it would work. the ideas sounds sound to me as long as the new hu doesn't put out a extremely high amount of power...

i did exactly what you're talking about. i got the adapter through crutchfield, and have my deck running off of the stock amps. it works fine, and sounds good enough for me! :D
