vacuum advance

does anyone know what this does for your car and how? also, can i bypass it. just plug up both ends. Its on my distributor, and goes to the primary metering block of my carb. I beleive it is bad is why im asking. thx!!!!!

Vacuum advance alters your timing based on the vacuum signal from your carb. It isn't a bad thing. It advances your timing under hard accelleration and high RPMs, in most cases making more power. At least in stock trim. After enough modifications, the engine will demand different enough timing that a stock dizzy just cant fufill, thats why aftermarket distributors/ignition controllers exist. I'm currently using a locked out stock dizzy(vacuum advance plate welded in place, mechanical advance locked out) and a MSD programmable ignition box(not the expensive 7-series box, but the cheap, $200, add-on box with more limited features... I wish I could afford the 7-series!).

mine is a 351, completly stock, and i have throttle hesitation, it want to die when i give it a lot of gas. I was told (after i checked everything on carb) that the v.a. is the only other thing that could cause that. So i need to replace it then, right? Also, its like 25-30 for a new one, or i can get a remanufactured dist with one for 40, should i get the rem dist? it has a lifetime warranty. its from oreillys. my dist is stock, motor has 96k miles.

i also checked it, i held the engine at 2000rpm, and then pluged the dizzy up to carb, and it was suppose to run rpm higher, but it stayed the same. i was told that means it is bad. it is also very loose on distributor

if I were you I would just get a ready to run MSD distributor. They can be pricey depending on engine but are well worth it. And very easy to change the v.a. as you upgrade your engine.

yea but im not loking to spend more than i have to. The only mod i may do would be a new intake, but nothing extreme. thats it other than exhaust headers for a long time. also, im looking to swap in a fuel injected 351, im gonna swap intake and my carb, do i need my old distributor due to me not having a computer and the v.a???

If you are buying your EFI from edelbrock I would call them and ask for a complete kit. It will come with a computer module that you can install in the driver compartment and you can control fuel and spark curves. it has a built in tach, water temp and many other features. it is a wise investment for the money.

im not running efi, im running my carb, thx though! im gonna take the intake and efi off, and put my intake and carb on. thats why i was wondering if i needed my dist, im thinking i do, just wanted another opinion on it.
