1982 Camaro 5.0, temperature gauge does not work, I changed the gauge itself and the temperature sensor located on the thermostat housing but it still does not work, when I turn the key on to start the gauge registers 260 deg. then it goes back down to 100 degs and does not climb as the engine warms up. What else can I do to correct this problem. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

I think the temperature sensor on the thermostat housing if for the ECM and not the gauge. There should be 3 temp sensors I think but only one of them is for the gauge.

Can U Tell Me Were There Located

Its supposed to be on located in the driver side head, between the number 1 and 3 spark plugs. It just slides on and clips there, so its very easy to knock off.

why is there a temp sensor in the thermostat housing? i dont think the 1982 was fuel injected

if its an LG4 it is right on top of the thermo housing mine is the same way. guage could be shot. gm has a history of faulty guages :(

the temp sensor in the thermostat housing is used to control the opening and closing of the thermostat. this controls flow of coolant out of the engine into the radiator.

Doesn't the thermostat open when the water temperature rises? I'd think that this sensor feeds the ECM, verifying that the engine is at operating temperature. The ECM uses this que to start monitoring the exhaust O2 and adjusting the fuel mixture and idle speed accordingly. Just my understanding of the crappy closed loop electronic carb system. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/rofl.gif Corrections welcomed.

thermostat is controlled by the temp sensitive spring holding it closed. when the water temp rises the spring expands and opens it up to allow water flow. the temp sensor has nothing to do with the opening and closing of the thermostat. it usually feeds into the ecm to provide information to see where the engine is running and how fuel ratio, etc. has to be adjusted to provide optimal emmissions. it also shows how hot the coolant is running in the engine.

oh i remembered another thing.... i dont remember since it been a while since i drove the lg4 but if you have a ses goin on cuz of the temp sensor, make sure the wires still have their shields on them, and if any wore off, or got chewed off by the lil furry things, tape them and it should work again
