Hi,
I have a 1995 lumina. Yesterday the oil light came on. There is plenty of oil but the light stays on. I'm thinking it is either the oil pump or the sensor. How do I determin which???

Can you pull a code?
I have had the car for 5 years and up until now I have only put tires and breaks on. I don't know how to get the code. I think I will go to the local library and read there Chiltons

Stupid question: Is it the oil light or the "CHANGE OIL SOON" light?

It's the "low oil" light. The oil was changed 2500 miles ago and has plenty of oil

Another "silly" question for you....
Are you checking your oil lever when the car is hot or cold? Are you on a slope when checking it?

Unfortunately, 95's had obd2 computers, so you cant read the codes yourself unless you have an obd2 scanner tool. ($175)
Youve got a bad oil pressure sensor. They're kind of a biotch to get to so ive heard. I havent had to replace mine yet. Its between the water pump and the ac compressor, right in the side of the block. Its hard to get to and you need a special socket to get the thing out.

You can try Autozone. The will do a code check for free if they have the reader.

It's been a few days sence I have checked this, I want to thank everybody for there help. The light is still on. I have not had the oppertunity to try and advice yet. To answer the question of being hot or cold. I have done it both ways and yes there is plenty of oil. To answer the question about being the car being level or on a incline. Level. I will post the results of what I have tryed and the results. Thanks everybody

According to the Chiltons I read you are correct. If it is the sensor it will be a Bi**h.

The low oil lite come on in my 95 Lumina too. According to the info i read it only checks the oil level when the key is turned on and not when the motor is running. If you disconnect the sensor the lite comes on. it's located in the bottom of the oil pan. I robbed a spair from a junk yard and checked it out, It's held in with one bolt and i put a tie rap around the stem to hold the float up and plugged it in and the lite stayed on. Some times my lite comes on then the next it won't. I'm thinking a open in the wire to it or loose terminal's in the connector, As in the tension on the female pin's to the male pin's in the sensor. I haven't tried shorting the terminal's out yet or inserting the same pin's in the terminal's and checking the tension yet.
As alway's the crankcase is full of oil and why did some one think of this stupid light, Useless to me and it's just annoying.
PS My 95 is OBD-1
PPS Just noticed again this post is over 10 year's old. But mabey this well help some one else as well

I checked the terminal tension on the terminals and they are fine.
Jumped the terminals and now the annoying lisht is off.
So I took the easy way out and diked the wires at the connector and butt connected then together and srink wrapped it and tucked the connector into the loom and wire tied it all up. This car did already have a new low oil level sensor in it.
Not the correct fix but the low oil light is off.

Oil level sensor = Dipstick. It's been foolproof for over 100 years. The light, on the other hand is not foolproof, just idiot-friendly.
In other words, you may be better off without it.

Copy that bowtie on the dipstick.
I just can't stand the stupid red light on.
Thanks for the reply.
Have a good day.

Only problem is, ask a customer when was the last time they pulled their dipstick to check their oil level......probably never, and couldn't find it if they looked for it.....
The low oil light probably saved a lot of engines....
There are three lights.....low oil level....low oil pressure....and also your change oil light(based on time, and engine revolutions)......
I think they are all good ideas.......if I didn't change the oil in my wife's car, it would never be done....
