520i shift indicator

Own a 1991 520i automatic transmission. I just had an exclamation point enclosed in a spiked circle pop up on the dash indicator panal for the shifter position. Typically I see E - D (economy drive) which is my usaul mode operation. Owners manual is in German. Car still drove and went into reverse. Any idea what this means and what is the fix?
