I'M ON I-5 ON MY WAY TO MY GIRLS HOUSE AND AS I'M DRIVING LISTENING TO METHODMAN :grinyes: A 2ND GEN MR-2 A CIVIC SI AND A MUSTANG 5.0(THAT SOUNDED PRETTY MEAN) ALL CAME UP BEHIND ME.
FUNNY THING IS, I DONT THINK ANY OF THEM WERE WITH EACHOTHER, WE JUST KINDA HAPPEND TO BE ALL IN ONE BUNCH.
WELL THE MUSTNAG MADE THE FIRST MOVE AND I FOLLOW THE MR-2 AND THE CIVIC ARE BEHIND ME. WE SWERVE THROUGH TRAFFIC EVENTAULY LEAVING THE MR-2 AND CIVIC BEHIND.
SO I GET DIRECTLY BEHIND THE MUSTANG TURN DOWN THE METHODMAN, ROLL UP THE WINDOWS AND POP UP THE LIGHTS, AND THE MUSTANG KNOWS ITS TIME.
HE DOWNSHIFTS AND SO DO I ABOUT A SECOND AFTER.
HE PULLS A CAR LENGTH AHEAD OF ME AND HEAR I COME PULLING BACK MY LENGTHS AND GOING LIKE ARNOLD PLAYING TUG-A-WAR WITH DANNY DAVIDO(IT REALLY WASN'T THAT BAD, I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT) I PULL A CAR LENGTH IN FRONT AND SHIFT EARLY TO 4TH.
I'M STILL PULLING AND BY THE TIME WE REACHED 130MPH I SHUT DOWN AS I WAS 2 AND A HALF CAR LENGTHS IN FRONT OF HIM.
I GOT NEXT TO HIM AND GAVE HIM A THUMBS UP AND HE GAVE ME THE NOD AND OFF I WENT

A little off-topic, but bear with me.
I just drove a manual 5.0 mustang the other day, and those things put out an impressive amount of torque stock...it was hard to believe that they run low 15's stock. I actually wouldn't mind picking up one of those to play with, once I fall into some cash.
K back on-topic: Nice race, I love it when everything falls in place perfectly by random chance like that...like when you pull up to a stoplight 4 lanes wide with three other cars revving....

The low 15's happens a lot cause of auto's and 100,000 mile plus 5.0's everywhere. If you had a stick with a good low mileage 87-93 5.0 you'd be down near the mid 14's with some practice launching.
Also I think he said GTO cause 3000GT VR4's are called that in Japan and Europe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when they were new, they were tested at mid-to-low 15's with some high 15's.
Not saying they're not capable of mid 14's, but the "mileage" excuse was kinda bothering me, especially since my low-15 second car has never had a problem with a stock one, and my car has over 125K itself.
Now an LX 5.0, on the other hand...http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/naughty.gif

You are correct sir, and with the placement of the steering wheel on that picture, I would say that it is a GTO.

Also, as far as I know, the greatest hindrance of the 5.0's was their shitty, stock heads, that would kill the car's high-RPM breathing, mileage or not.

Most of the 15 second times people see out of these cars are attributed to what I said. Then also with the 5-speed 5.0 and 225 stock width tires launching and even into second there is a huge area for driver error not getting the best out of the car.
True many magazines like R&T, C&D who are notorious for not really getting the most out of cars in the 1/4 mile had low 15's as result in the 1/4.
But magazines which put drivers who really know how to get the most in the 1/4 mile of any car like MM&FF, 5.0, Super Chevy, etc.., tend to show what the real potential of the car is. Now I could post up a MM&FF or 5.0 times from 87-93 but then you could say it is a Mustang magazine biase. So I found one from Muscle Car Review a source less questionable for the masses.

Also, as far as I know, the greatest hindrance of the 5.0's was their shitty, stock heads, that would kill the car's high-RPM breathing, mileage or not.
As far as in the quest for mid-low 14's the biggest hinderance to a 5.0 EFI would not be not breathing in the top end cause it doesn't need it. The real problems arise like this:
#1 Launching: this car on the stock 225's take a very skillful driver. The 300ft/lbs the EFI long runners create from a lil 302 melt the 225's so easy. So going to bigger and or stickier tires will take driver skill away and make you get the most from your strong point.
#2 Gearing: The 5-speed EFI 5.0's got a best of 3.08 but many got 2.73 rear gears and others between. The auto's get a little extra help wit 3.27's in the back. Already established that the stock motor is not a great high RPM breather, but with gearing that actually matches the low end torque of the stock motor. This really awakens the car's true potential.
If you did these two things and could drive well at the 1/4 mile you could see high 13's.

When I read reviews on the 5.0, the only two things that almost everyone complains about are that the stock brakes are too weak, and the suspension needs a little bit of tweaking. I think new performance tires, new four-wheel disc brakes, and 3.73's in the back is enough to get the 5.0 into the 13's...

carnut, you are correct. when my car was running. with full exhaust, 373's, intake, and pro 5.0 shifter. My car had (when we raced) approx. 135,000 miles on it. at that time i hadn't taken it to the track. Later about 180,000 on the odometer i took it to the track. I ran 14.81 at 94, and a 14.98 at 95.

That kinda gives credence to my 15.00 G-Tech time :)
Also, is that new motor up and running yet? Can't wait to see what that beast can do!

Do you remember what your 60' times were?
94mph and 95mph traps indicate the car is capable of much lower ET's.

The trap speeds tell me the car can definetly do mid 14's and maybe see high 13's. I know this is a wide area but no knowing your 60' I'm missing part of the picture of what happened. Your 60's may be bad enough were if you cut them down to even a reasonable number you traps would be even higher than what they are and you'd see 13's.
Also you can see from your higher trap but over a second slower ET there is inconsistency in your driving again not helping get a clear picture of what the car was doing so much as you.
I think a lot of your problems is probably your 60's were pretty bad. This is the area that needs the most practice in drag racing especially with a V8/RWD/manual car.

This is a fairly typical time for a 5.0 these days. Your 60' could be better for a stock 5.0 aim for 2.2 flat 60' that is pretty average. With ya trap mph you could just break into 14's. Is it a 5-speed or auto?

GTStang
08-13-2004, 02:05 AM
Trap mph is the speed your car is going at a certain time trap in the 1/4 mile. Usually 98% of the time when some one is talking about trap mph, it's the speed thier car was going when it finished it's 1/4 mile run. But you can also have trap speeds at different points of the 1/4 mile run depending what the track is measuring.
