Question on Tires

Hi!

I have some yokohama tires. 195/50/ZR16

I havent bought tires for a very long time....havent really been driving much.

Can some people please post some good replacements for those kinds of tires? Im looking for around the same speed rating and size. That size does not rub against my car. I got a place thats willing to mount and balance and align the car for a good fee.

I have a 1989 Honda Civic Hatchback SI. Its lowered about 2.5 inches. Tokico Gas Shocks and Eibach Springs.

Thank you Everyone!

www.tirerack.com read the reviews to see what would work best for you. Z rated tires on a Civic? LOL that's like putting 4 piston calipers on, you don't need it! Z rated is for speeds in excess of 149mph.

1st of all that is the wrong size tire for a Civic. You should have a 195/55x15" or 205/45x16" tire. That size you have will make your car feel sluggish if I'm figuring it out right.

jackasssi - Oh wasnt too sure when I got them, i got a good deal...that would explain why the ride wasnt too bad when I almost got arrested.

CivicSiRacer - Nope it did not feel slugish at all....it kind of felt like when I was on 14s. Just alot easier to turn.....

Ok so I should not get some "Z" Rated tires...i guess "T" rated should be good enough.

195/55x15? I got 16 inch rims...will that be a problem?

205/45x16? Ill look into this. Any good brands I should be looking into? I got like 700 dollars to blow on the tires if i need to.

Also I drive around 150~350 miles a day now.

Thanks!

im going for those 205/45/16s that you told me to look into.

Just wondering what kind I should get.

Dunlop SP Sport FM901

or

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712

also should I get the Road Hazard Program?

thanks!

Take a look at the professional ratings of the two tires you are considering. Given the number of miles you drive daily you might want to consider a 400AA rated tire, long tread life, so you don't have to replace the set every six months...

ah didnt know they showed that on that site.

Yokohama Avid H4S

toyo t1-s stickiest tires ever imo

Stickier than what? What tires have you driven on to compare?

This is my list of tires I have used:

Toyo FZ4
Toyo T1S
Toyo RA1s
Yokohama A520s
Yokohama A032R
Yokohama ES100
Yokohama Paradas
Kumho VictorRacers
Kumho V700
Kumho 712
Kumho MX
Falken Azenis
Falken Ziex
Falken ST115
Nitto 555
Nitto 555r
Dunlop SP5000
Dunlop SP9000
Hoosier A0303
Hoosier A0304
Hooiser R0303

And out of those tires the stickiest are the R compounds. The Yokohama A032Rs are streetable.

But the Toyos are not the stickiest.

thats quite the list you got there.
i have owned
yokohama paradas
yokohama a046
pirelli p7000
kumho ecsta mx
dunlop sp sport tm901
nitto 555 extremes
toyo t1-s
and out of those the toyos were by far the stickiest.
grip the road alot better, and had to raise my launch to 6500rpm's
to get my tires to even spin
the other tires i launched around 4-5500rpm's
and they also have the deepest tread. and have lasted alot longer than my other tires.

CivicSiRacer... you are maybe on of the only civic drivers on here that i respect (highly).... having driven on all those different tyres i have some questions to ask....

-what do u think of the kumho 712's? i know theyre nothing special but they are very cheap and i was wondering if they would be a good street tyre.

-why havent you driven on any bridgestones? i'm also thinking of getting potenza RE950's so i was wondering if u have heard anything about them.

-pros/cons of low profiles....

and to do with Auto-X....

-is there any reason u chose the civic coupe over the hatch???
-what will i need for amateur low level auto X, probably just with a club for now ???

Well then yeah out of all those tires the best ones I see are the Kumho MX and the Toyo T1S.

Deeper tread also means more tire squirm in most cases.

I used the 712s for my 2001 autocross season (215/40x16). And they were ok. A bit slippery in corners in the wet. But yeah they are great street tires.

I haven't driven on Bridgestones because they are on the expensive side. I go through about 8 tires a year depending on the conditions of the lots I run, but I also shave my tires for autocross.

I chose the Coupe because ever since I saw the 1999-2000 Civic Si I had to have one. Especially with the DOHC VTEC which was never offered in the coupe.

Read my autocross help page: http://home.dejazzd.com/mlouie/autocross.html it will help you with what you need for autocross :)

damn, the tires rub really hard on my car. I found a good body shop thats willing to bend the fender lip for me. Lets hope that will fix most of the problems.

Also when I figure out how to use the camera on my cell phone ill post picks of the rims/tires.

Thanks guys

I did a test drive session for Bridgestone a couple years ago back to test out the RE950's when they first came out, and I was quite impressed. If you live where it can rain a bit, then this might be the tire for you. They stick in the wet as well as most high performance tires (not ultra high performance however) stick in the dry, no kidding. The cars we tested them on was '01 BMW 325i sedans, where they had both ABS and traction control turned OFF for the purpose of the test. They set up an auto-X style course in the parking lot of a nearby local horse racing track, and then completely wet down the course to simulate wet weather conditions. At both 100-90% tread and 50% tread, the 950's were pretty hard to break loose. I had to completely mash throttle about 3/4th through the turn to even get the car to drift out of the turns and curves. Even running them through the course at 50-60mph, they didn't even so much as hint of wanting to loose their grip, of course I don't recommend driving like that when the ground is wet, since my test drive was a totally controlled situation.

If you're going to auto-X, I'd highley recommend either the Yokohama ES100, it's an excellent dry grip tire and pretty sticky, as well it can handle wet weather with moderate ease, though not as well as the RE950 of course (the ES100 is the tire I've auto-X'ed on through this year so far, and last year as well). The other tire is the Falken Azenis Sport. It's the more widely used tire in auto-X as far a a decent tread rating street tire goes, and it's about the stickiest street tire on the market too that's not an R-compound, I believe the Potenza S0-3 is sticker however, but I haven't any experience with the S0-3 though. The Azenis Sport isn't so good with the wet traction I hear, however.

NO car is the best. Your only a good autocrosser depending on how you drive. Unlike drag racing winning is dependent on you the DRIVER not how much money you spend or what car you have.
