I just need to burn off a little tension at the moment. As some of you may know, I am a corrections officer. This evening, we had a guy get arrested and brought to jil for agg assault for pointing a gun at his wife and kid. the guy made several suicidal comments, and was placed in a room so he could be monitored. now, with three officers down in booking (where I work) and the fact that we have a high volume of traffic, the dude managed to get 2 minutes to grab his pants tie from his sweat pants and wrap it around his neck and then try to fasten to it the fire sprinkler head in his cell. my partner saw it first and started calling out for his door to be opened. I ran over, and as soon as the door opened, I speared the guy and knocked him down onto his bed. we were able to get him secured in restraints, and I cut the string from around his neck, but even though it happened about 10 hours ago, It is still fresh in my mind. the thought of seeing him looking at us through the window of the door, and trying to speed up because he knew we were coming through as soon as the door slide open is a little unnerving. I know right now I can't sleep.... just keep thinking if we didnt spot him at that moment....

I do feel better though, getting it out and talking about it a bit.

That's a difficult issue.. Do you let someone kill themselves if they really want to die?

yeah but his job is to protect the people and protect the inmate. its not his decision if the guy should die or not. he can kill himself out of jail if he wants. good job by the way.

Kinda weird, but I can actually sorta picture that in my head from the inmates viewpoint. :dunno:

Would a sweatpants tie have held him? Or the sprinkler, for that matter? Still disturbing, however...

yeah id say u did a good job! It's not ur decision to let this man die or not. That really must have been a freaky site.

I have this picture of the sprinklers breaking and water pouring down on the guy sitting on the floor without any pants on and the pants still around his neck...hehe he definitly would have felt like a dumbass then and really would want to kill himself

That's dedication to work, for you.
No one likes to see someone go nuts on their watch. A persons deranged behavious is disturbing to see.
I am sure when whatever stress or misery this guy has goes away, he will be grateful you didn't let him swing.

I'm with everything everyone here said in this thread (except Yogs). Good job...as MagicRat said, I'm sure he will be grateful later on.

Send us his name. I want to bring this back up after he's gone back and pulled the trigger of that gun he was waving around his wifes face.

Don't give Sniper doubts about what he did. He did the right thing because the guy was in custody and the officers there are supposed to protect the inmates at the facility, even from themselves. It's up to the justice system to take care of the punishment phase. If he wants to kill himself later on once he gets out of prison, that's fine, but, in the meantime, the officers there have a job to do at the facility. :2cents:

Don't misunderstand me. I have no grievence with the man doing his job. And he did it without hesitation. Nor, am I expecting him to behave any different. Just understand that I have no sympathy for someone waving a gun around in someone elses face like that. I can see that my initial comment didn't convey that very well.

I totally agree. It probably woulda been a good thing if he did succeed in killing himself... however then SniperX13 would probably never have forgotten that. Probably felt like he failed at his job.
Good job SniperX13 with the quick response and saving the dude!
