Hello,
I just purchased my 1996 Grand Am not to long ago, and Just found out it was TWO QUARTS low on oil! Ahh! Umm, Last night it started clicking in the engine...It only does it when I accelerate. Could this be from the oil being so low, and would an oil change probably take care of it? Also, It was low on Tranny fluid too...(was not very well looked at when I got it...mistake on me!) Any advice could help..

Thanks :)

i would say oil change right now, dot wait aly longer and dont drive anywhere, if the oil dosnt help, you looking at a main bearing im thinking, that means a lot of work and money, depending on how you go about it.

A clicking sound is more like a lifter noise than anything else. A oil change will help. If its a clunking noise, than its a bearing which is serious. Unless its smoking out the tailpipe blue, 2 quarts low is a awful lot. I would also check for a leak. The fluids including the tranny may just need to be topped off. The lifters will get noisy (click) when they are low on oil usual without any major damage.

Good luck

yeah the lifters were the first thing that came to my mind as well. One mistake i made one time when checking my oil was that i was not on level surface (idiot) and i thought i was about a quart low, freaked out, put in a quart then realized how dumb i was. Had to pull the plug and drain some...

made me not only look like the dumbest guy but i felt like the dumbest guy too....my mom laughed at me! My own mother...

I found some more problems today, as I went to change the oil. The knocking is getting REALLY loud, and the engine is shoving oil into the resivour (spellin') I talked to a mechanic and he thinks a head gasket may be the problem, And yes he said the pinging could be a Bearing, or a Rod, or lifter. Looks like Im going BACK to where I got the car tomorrow (it has only been 2 days)..Maybe he will make the deal good..

Thanks for all the help... Will tell ya what happens after this.
