1998 aurora stalling with air on ???

Can any one tell me why this is happening , it checks out ok . but still
makes little jerks when running the air or the crusie control >?? it has me going nuts , help me please , we love this car but this is scary .

I'm not completely sure of your symptom. It sounds to me like what your are feeling is the A/C clutch engaging and disengaging based on the pressure/temperature at the evaporator. This may be particularly noticeable with the cruise control engaged as you normally expect to feel smooth operation. It sounds as if it's cycling rather frequently. You may want to have the refrigerant checked for proper charge. A low charge will cause too rapid an expansion at the evaporator and thus cause a lower than expected temperature and pressure. This in turn will cause the A/C clutch to cycle off....naturally, when the pressure equalizes and the temperature warms the clutch will be signaled to cycle back on. This on/off cycle will cause you to feel like the engine is hesitating.

That's my guess based on the information you've provided.

My 98 is doing basically the same thing. It is the compressor cycling on and off. One more note, my compressor is quite noisy at idle but quiets down with engine speed increase. It is disappointing that the compressor pulls so much on the engine. Since mine is noisy at idle, I suspect it will be failing soon. Maybe thats why it pulls so much power.

:disappoinOK, could be one of several items casuing the car to stall.

:rolleyes:1. Fuel problems, bad fuel filter or fuel pump.
:mad:2. Worse the AC Compressor is coming on, and its grabing on so hard that clutch is about to seize up. If the car is hard to start, gert into a shop for repairs or lossen the belt slightly.

I had this happen ened up replaced not only the compressor and the starter.

They had it in the shop 2 days and could,nt find anything wrong ? but when we drive it and air on it still has sudden surges , darndest thing i,ve ever seen , Anybody got any more idea,s to pass my way .Thanks for all the hepe also ..

I would check two things;

1.The stalling might be a bad TPS(throttle position sensor)
2.Compressor rattling - you might check to see if there is the proper amount of freon in the system, if it is low it can rattle due to lack of lubricant which is in the freon.

I had another person reply with a suggestion toi what it could be:

*****"Believe it or not I had this exact same problem! I had it at the mechanics on several different occasions and they would replace different things. These guys were not just trying to milk me for money, nor were they stupid, but this problem is extremely hard to diagnose and also very hard to get the car to die while at the shop. They were finally able to duplicate the engine quiting situation. And they were finally able to solve the problem and now I have not had it quit on me in over a year. It was NOT the fuel rail, NOT the filter, NOT the pump.
Believe it or not they replaced the two crankcase sensors and that fixed the problem!!!!!!!!!
Have your mechanic check out the crankcase sensors!!!"*****
