EGR valve question

Hello, I'm new and and hoping someone can help me out. My 96 2.2
has been sputtering, mainly at lower rpm, and my mechanic said the
diagnostic gave him back a code indicating the EGR valve. My questions
are, does that seem to be a common problem, and if so, has anyone
replaced it themselves. If so, a description of location and what it looks
like would be really helpful.
