Hi all
My R33 skyline has about 67000km's on it, and I was wondering if it is worth it to get the cat converter out and see if the guts have collapsed in it. If the insides are trashed, if I empty it and put it back (until I save for a new 3" system), will my skyline pass an emissions test? Does anyone in Oz have experience with this.
This is my only real concern.
cheers,
Brett :bloated:

Illegal.
Big fine.
Do not do it for road use.
If you do some trackwork, just get a bit of straight pipe made up so you can bolt it in place of the cat if you so wish. Hell you could even do the same for the muffler.....

Weld a pipe through it (2 1/2" if it is a standard cat)
and you will notice the power difference.
If you fill up your car with 98PULP and tell the emissions tester it is
91ULP then you should pass.

Skyhigh, love your insight, I'm curious as to how it works - I take it the fact that 91ULP doesnt burn nearly as well as 98ULP in our jap machines and therefore puts out higher emission levels?

Another questions regarding Cat gut removal, what becomes of the O2(?) Sensor that sits in the Cat itself once the guts are removed? Does it foul and become useless? If so what effect does that have on the vehicle performace?

Stu - Lucky Bastard! :) Nice collection mate. So I take it you've gutted all 3 cats?? All I can tell you so far is our government are TIGHT ARSES looking to make a quick buck off of their road users.

got a straight pipe on mine and it doesn't smell. maybe like exhaust but... WTF? toxic? maybe you shat your pants. If it's giving you headaches perhaps it's an exhaust leak? Since it's your friends car and you are not speaking about it first hand then I seriously question that. Isn't it nice how everybody is always talking about their FRIENDS car and never THEIR car.
BLUD, basicy just follow your gut man. If you know the cops are fat pigs in your area then don't do it, or just don't get caught. I would look into it and see what the fine would be just so you know what you are getting yourself into.
I don't know though, I have never had a cop look under the passenger side of my car though. And I have never had a cop pull me over that know's more about cars than I do. Perhaps having on when you get your car tested isn't a WISE idea, but putting it on right after.... there you go. that's what I would do. The straight pipe I have even has the mounts for the factory heat shield so unless you are looking for it, your not just going to notice that I have no cat.
GTS4, my straight pipe has a spot for you to put in the factory O2 sensor, I don't know what is does to performance though?

yeh well its a straight through pipe now from the turbo, and doesn't smell any more so there was proly heaps of shit in the pipe, some cops do check the cat, they tap it with their baton or whatever, and u can tell when theres no cat, should just get a high flow cat, not as illegal.

Hey guys,
I know this is old but thought I would retrieve it for future reference...
The fine for not having a Cat is HUGE and depends on how many cylinders you have / engine capacity as to how much the courts / EPA can impose...
The emissions from a Unleaded car are extremely toxic(carcinogenic) which is why a Cat is installed on unleaded cars. It does pollute the air but is better than dying of lead poisoning :(
Did you also know that the fine for having NOS hooked up and filled on a public street is up to 10G per cylinder? Even if U are not using it?!?
GRRRR...
