One fateful driving home out of no while in back to back traffic while going say about 30mph. My engine starts reving up to the redline and the car is going hardly nowhere. then it catches drive normally then starts reving again this time while I'm going about 20mph. this is in D4 on an automatic 1996 accord lx model. pulled over Tried D3 and other gears as well. car drove for a little then started doing the same in the other gears. I can still feel the difference in drive types when I switched gears. I made it home looked in my Hannes manual. It says prob could be due to trans fluid needing to be changed. So I did that test drove the car seemed to have worked fine tried it in all gears. Next day while driving out of nowhere the rpms shoot up engine roaring car going hardly no where. check engine light eventually came on. Shut the car down got it towed back home but when I turned the car back on and drove it on to the flat bed truck there was no check engine light. Have yet to take it to a shop due to lack of money. But talked to one technician he says it could be electrical and maybe not mechanical prob. won't know till he looks at it. Has anyone else had this prob and what did you have to do and around how much did it cost you. your advice is appreciated thank you.

sounds like your transmission gears are slipping, slipping caused by worn out clutch plates. in order to replace worn clutch plates you need to basicaly rebuid your transmission. you can take your car to transmission shop and have then to evaluate it, they offer that kind of service for free. but don't let them do any work on it because that gone cost you.
if they say that your gears are slipping, you should get "new" transmission from junk yard and have installed by same transmission shop or any repair shop. transmission shop may not like that, because that is minimal earning for them. getting transmission from junk yard is whole a lot cheaper then to rebuild old one.

you can search for your "new" transmission at www.car-part.com.
it's network of junk yards across north america, so you can get transmission from local place or from canada, if price is right. some junk yards offer one or two year warranty on transmission, so if something wrong you get replacement for free.

When you changed your transmission fluid, what color was it? How did it smell?

What brand of fluid did you use to replace it?

Have you checked the fluid level while in neutral, when your car is completely warmed up?
