I was just wondering what are some things you can change besides the usual bolt ons to gain power out of an engine. For example I always here people talking about porting and polishing heads, changing pistion rings, and so forth.

So what are some pretty common ways that you can add power to any engine and what kind of gains are we talking about here? Can any car have its heads ported and polished?

Thanks

1.larger tb
2.aftermarket im, port matched to the tb. probably a victor x but of course nothing beats itb's but i wouldnt use those for the street if you plan on running on the street
3.port polished head to match im
4.bigger cams, stage 2 or 3 whatevers with adjust cam gears
5.bigger valves, 1mm oversize. could even use hi comp valves
6.bored out cylinders, recommended .5mm on stock sleeves, with sleeved motor go 86mm, this is on a b series. idk about other series motor
7. high compression pistons
8. stroker kit
9. header
10. exhaust
11. straight pipe if you like
12. and of course the most important a fully tuned stand alone so you dont blow your motor

I think you guys listed too much, and half the parts you've listed don't even pertain to N/A motors...like gutting your car? removing a/c and power steering?

Here's my take on it, and i'll try to keep it simple

Intake Components:
CAI, Throttle Body, Intake Manifold

Valvetrain:
Cams (+gears), Valve Springs, Valves, Retainers

Head:
P&P

Block:
High Comp Pistons (+sleeves)

Exhaust:
Header, Test Pipe, Catback

And if you're feeling hardcore:
Stroker + Individual Throttle Bodies

i mean the list can go on for days, every mod listed will in some way or another make your car either more reliable, or quicker. but to list every mod possible would be endless, cuz there is always something else that can be done.

what exactly is blue printing the blaock, and port and polishing? and sleeves? sorry for the n00bism

not too sure on blue printing. but port and polishing is when you grind out the burrs and rough spots on the head that all added together restricts complete flow of air. Also depends on how far you want to take it, you can grind quite a lot of metal out and open up the air holes and make them slightly larger than they normally would. Sleeves are the "metal cylindars" that your pistons move up and down in. If you take off the head you can see them. Of course that's basic explanations.

blueprinting is a process of matching each piece of the motor together, and making each of thier weights equal. so you have 4 connecting rods, each with a different weight, which ever is the lightest, that weight will be used to file down the other 3 so they are all equal and spin together freely.

It really depends where you go. I would go to a reputable engine builder. Theres plenty in Cali. Try JG dynamics. D-H racing....etc..

IF you're goin to a place that hardly works on honda but they still know what they're doin...supposedly. I would just do mild p&p. I would just build the head up first and then p&p. Well i mean buy the parts for the head and install them after you p&p of course :)

CrxLvr- good one on the blue printing explanation.

at a local shop by me, the cost of a P&P job is around $300, but thats with the head already removed from the motor.

Eh yeh you're actually right. Its not all the times but still they had a few cases that they messed up. Anyways if i was you i would definitely go with import builders. IMO they're the best. www.importbuilders.com. Trust me they know what they're doin. ITs pricey but hey you want the best for your car then go to them.
