Hello,
I just recently bought an 91 Celica GT, and yes you don't have to tell me again to search on GOOGLE. I tried and tired of it, well anyway I am looking forward to swapping an 3sgte engine into an 91 Celica GT (5sfe). And I was hoping for an 98 3sgte engine swap but i dont know if an 98 would fit an 91. Would it fit even though its an Celica engine?
Not just that I am only an FWD and I wonder if there is also an FWD 3sgte out there somewhere. If there isn't, is there anyway to put in the AWD 3sgte into an FWD 5sfe without changing the drivetrain to an AWD?
Whats different about an 91 engine and an 98 engine? Is it just the size different or is the parts in different area of the engine.
Please try not to use big words because im an newbie. Trying to learn as much as possible about swapping motor before i actually buy the engine.

Thank you,
YangS

That engine should fit. You may need different motor mounts.

I believe theres a post on this board about a guy selling his car, he has a 3SGTE and its been converted to FWD.

Motor mounts? Would that require a lot of money?
And does it have to be converted to FWD, can I just swap it in without touching drivetrain?

Thank you,

Motor mounts are just rubber pieces usually that hold the engine in the car but let it move a bit to cut down on vibration. They are not expensive though maybe 25 bucks each???

If by swapping it in you mean with the whole AWD system, I am assuming its possible but would be alot of work and you would need more parts.

If you mean just swapping the engine alone, all you need a transmission that will bolt upto the engine block and will mate to the crankshaft ok.

Oh, ok thanks, so all i need is an transmission. If so then any trans would work as long as it fits together good? So the engine isnt an AWD or an FWD, its just the trans that has to be an AWD or FWD? If that the case then I can just put the motor in and put my FWD trans into it to.

Thank you,

Would an 98 3sgte fit an 91 Celica if it were to be swap? And can it run an FWD trans? Is there also any converting needed to be done?

Thank you,

first off a 3sgte fits directly into ur current motor mounts, no fabrication requiered. second off theres no way to make your gt an all wheel drive because of the chassis...unless your going to fabricate your own chassis then forget that.

your 5sfe tranny will work, but not for long, it cant withstnad all the power being made from the motor so itll die out soon, expect to lose a syncro in less than a year...you can use a camry v6 tranny or an mr2 tranny scine it is baci

(sry) its basically a front wheel ddrive tranny (half shafts an all) but just in the back........and btw

btw expect to spend at least 4-5K on this swap beacuse you need to sompletely change the wiering harness as well

in my opinion its best to stick with ur 5sfe, bigger displacment and aluminum block, may not be able to hold as much boost but has a beter tourqe and HP curve than the 3sgte

When you guys mean by the 5sfe tranny will die out from the motor, do you guys mean the clutch?, pressure plate?, fly wheel?, or the entire tranny that is going to die out?

Thank you,

entire tranney, not only that you need to fabricate and have a 5sfe disk and 3sgte plate

hey yang...where are you located...im in st.paul...
but about your questions...the 98 will bolt on into your engine bay....for better results...use the 95 mr2 turbo tranny cause it comes lsd (limited slip) stock...making both tires spin at the same time...much better for launching off the line or on anyone...motor mounts...try to get your hands on the stock 98 mounts, for they are made to withstand the rocking and vibrations...stock gt mounts will rattle and your whole car will rattle like crap....also change your ecu so itll run correctly, your mass air flow sensor(located before the intake filter box) extend a wire long enough to reach the air sensor...anymore questions email me ([email protected])

if you use the mr2 transmission you will have to do alot of mods to the shifter linkages on the transmission since it was in a mid engine car and now its in a fwd car.. if i can find the write up on it, ill post it, but i hear its a pain.. i would just stick with the stock trans and if it blows up replace it with another.. its still relativly tough though.. i think it would hold up to the power for a good amount of time. especially if the motor is pretty mild and you dont drag race at every intersection..

im sure if u used the 5sfe tranney you could change the gear ratios to be closer and you could get more life outta it, as well as have better times( closer the ratios closer to the syncros, less stress to engage, more time to live)

i would say the 5sfe tranny would be able to handle anything up to 300 hp. and if it does blow they are everywhere, they super easy to find in junkyards for around 350. the motor mounts are more liek 50 bucks a peice. ur stock mounts should work.

dont use teh stock mounts, use the mounts that same with the motor, if none did, ur gunna have massive tourqe back

believe it or not you can put automatic tranny fluid in the manual box, it is thicker and will slow down the spinning gears quicker so that they last longer if you plan on keeping your 5sfe tranny. it will be slightly harder to shift but the tranny will last longer if you dont plan on dropping a lot of money on engine tranny and so forth.
