Why has AF resorted to popup ads ?
Make it stop ...

I get pop-up ads even on sites that don't usually have pop-ups.
I think a site slipped something into my hard drive, does anybody know how to get rid of this or a program to block pop-ups?

Igor is working on it. It has to do with the ads they're sending AF containing pop-ups and he has to manually reject them. I'm not a fan either.

This program will kill your pop-ups. If you want to open an extra window, or see a pop-up, just hold the ctrl key. As with most programs of this type - use at your own risk. http://www.geocities.com/Internet_Sweeper/

Hmm, the ctrl key eh? Sounds like Shifthead's Pop-up Stopper (http://www.shifthead.com/software/pop-up_stopper/default.htm)
I use Pop-up Stopper and I think it's fantastic. No config, just have to hold ctrl to allow a new window to appear. You can't even launch the browser without the ctrl key. Takes some getting used to, but it's as simple as they come. A little practice with the "timing" to allow a legit new window to appear before releasing the ctrl key in time to catch pop-ups is needed at times.

So far they're few and far between. I just got my first of the day, and I've been here 5 or 6 times so far.

Opera 6 has a built in pop-up stopper. One of my favorite features. It has never let one through.

And a hell of a lot of them. Is there any way to disable them from within a browser? Or maybe this is just a case of sending enough email to the moderators. I would be willing to start.

Grrrrrrr I'm just about ready for a boycott.
I *hate* damn popups. Why are they popular? Do they actually work? Do freaking morons actually click on them?? Hate them hate them hate them.
There, now I feel better. but I still hate them.

Not quite on topic but where else can I find techy perves ?
I am unable to view my Internet Options from my browser (Internet Explorer) due to a script from a porn site that changed my home page.
I can edit my options by right clicking on the Explorer icon, but not from inside the program. I have upgraded to IE 6 but the problem persists.
Any ideas what to do ? (other than wank less)

You mean something is preventing you from clicking Tools and Internet Options?

What if you type "alt," then "t," then "o?" Anything?

Yes, I get a message box telling me that this action has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer and that I should contact my system administrator.
I believe it was a bug in IE5 that has now been fixed, but something has been permanently (so it seems) altered.
The same thing happens for ALT T, O.
Initially it reset my home page to something very dodgey and then I think the aim was to stop me from changing it. There is a patch from micrsoft but it just closes the hole, but doesn't undo what has already been done.
Sorry, I know this isnt remotely Xterra related.

Is it something that could be fixed in the registry?

When you upgraded to IE 6 did you install over the old version or did you do an uninstall then do a clean install of version 6? Maybe doing an uninstall would clear up your problem.

Guys, apologies if you got some popups this weekend. I was away from the house the whole time and had no means of accessing the internet to delete all popup camapaigns from the site that are automatically enabled by the ad network.:(

go to ---> tools - internet options - security tab - custom level - script active x controls marked safe for scripting (disable)
then scroll down some more to ---> scripting - active scripting and disable.
that should take care of those nasty active x controls and java scripting pop ups.
some web pages won't load properly so go back in there to internet options - security tab - default level button - apply - ok. then reload browser. this is for ie only.
and of course flush your TIF directory when your done.
