Couple things could be 1. timing 2. plugged or partially plugged converter.

might need as tune up or a fuel problem too. might not be getting enough fuel try a fuel filter. and tune the ignition up plugs wires and cap make sure you got ngk's plugs. and get some good wires. and if your timing was that far off youd bend valves so i doubt thats the problem. and as for a converter im think the cat. they turn hollow and fall to peices usually when they get old ive never heard of them getting plugged but u never no i just never heard of it. a tune is a good place to start thou plugs wires cap and rotor. try that first its about 100 bucks if u want decent stuff.

if u got n e more ?'s i'll try to help you out but try the tune up first. ive been working on cars for 12 years. thats a good place to start.

if it runs hella rich it could get the cat clogged I guess, and as for the timing being off bending valves, ignition timing wont cause the pistons to hit the valves, a timing belt jumping a tooth and messing up the camshaft timing could make this happen. ignition being set FAR off causing a detonation I guess could damage a valve but hondas adjustment in the distibutor doesnt let you get that far off anyways, plus I dont see that damaging the valve anyways, cuz if thre timings way off and the mixture burns with the valve open there is no resistance against the valve to damamge it, and if its closed and the piston is on its upstroke when it ignites maybe youd bust a ringland or something, maybe damamge a valve.

this is my theory, you got a small 4 cylinder. are you going up the hill in 5th gear? my friends civics, my integras, my civic(when stock), friends integras, noen of them can efver pull up a hill in 5th gear, unless were speeding in 5th gear. it took me a 2 liter with high compression pistons to go up a hill in 5th with the tach sitting below 2k and the pedal not being pushed close to the floor, only about 1/2 inch down for me now.

so is it a very small hill or is it somewhat steep and your trying to go up it at 50. cuz 4 cylinders already dont have any torque, and hondas about the worst when it comes to a torquey 4 cylinder.

if it is running hella rich i would i fix that problem

it would probably a crappy o2 sensor that would cause it to run rich. how steep of hills in what gear though?
