98 Firebird Trans AM WS6 package. Ignition is locked up. Security
flashes on instrument panel; but ignition switch is dead when turned
to start position. Had done this a few times and cleaned resistor
chip on key as well as lock cylinder and after a wait of 3 or 4 minutes
it would start. Removed battery terminals and waited for 30 minutes
and locked radio up. Was able to get code and re-set codes and
got radio to work ok. Have tried battery replacement to no avail.
Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. THANKS

I love answering this one, the same week I bought my 98 Trans am this happened. Sounds like you have my problem, the wires to your ignition cylinder could be broken (mine were), this makes the security system think someone is trying to steal the car. I'd take the steering column apart, and check the ignition cylinder wires, the part is around $35, or the dealer can fix it for $450.00. The fourth gen cars are nice, but the wiring could have been better.

You are right on the money. Exactly what was wrong.
Had a local locksmith replace which cost $80. for new
cylinder and keys. However after he replaced wheel
now the horn wont work so he must have left unhooked or possibly broke that wire. Thanks for
your help.
