Mazda6 engine

Ok so i hear that the mazda6 ebgine is just a ford duratec that has had the valve timing adjusted to put out more hp, is this true?

Actually the engine is a mazda engine that ford is using as well. They share the same block and some other things. The mazda 2.3 has vvt while the ford 2.3 doesn't.
