hey everybody, i just got my new car and i figured i'd find others who appreciate it like i do. it's a 1991 3000GT SL. i absolutely love the car. it's like a dream driving it and i think it's the best looking car i've ever seen.
it's burgundy with white pinstripe and tan leather. it has 110k miles. it's completely stock (at this point anyways). i got it for $4500, which is a steal where i live. you almost never see one. it's in pretty good condition for a 13 year old car. has the normal small dings and scratches, but i can live with that. i might get the leather redone in the drivers seat though. the guy gave me new brakes and new front tires too! it's a very solid car overall and very fast as far as i'm concerned.
i would, however, like to make it faster. so, i've been weighing my options on what to do first. i think i'm going to get a K&N fuel injection performance kit (is this like cold air intake or is it completely different?) first, as the dealer i had look at it said the air filter is too small for the car anyways. he told me that K&N filters are no good though. i always thought they were the obvious choice for that? is he right? from there i don't know what gets you the best bang for your buck. i see alot of people do blow off valves and stuff. what else can i do that's under $200? i think i'll have to wait on the exhaust. i like the way it sounds now anyways.
i'm also going to get a CD player and new speakers since the stock speakers probably couldn't handle a new cd player. anybody recommend anything for this particular car? also, is the car keyless entry/alarm ready? the guy who sold it to me said it had a stock alarm, but i can't figure it out. sorry, this is probably a really long post. i just needed to tell someone who understands the feeling of owning these cars. thanks for reading.

Well first off, anyone who says anything bad about K&N is a moron. Get the K&N FIPK, it is the same idea as a cold air intake, except it doesn't come with a pipe, so you get air from your engine bay, rather than down by your wheel well. There will be a slight difference, but even still, any open element intake is better than that stock airbox.
2ndly, you have an SL, which doesn't have turbos...so no blow off valve for you. They are meant to release excess pressure from the turbos, so on a naturally aspired (N/A) car such as yours, you don't need it.
after your intake, get an exhaust, either borla, ATR, a vr4 catback, or a custom built one.
Welcome to AF, congrats on the car, and post any more ?s you need answering.

first off welcome to af. second what he said^^
and about your stock alarm. what happens is when you lock the doors and close them. if the door is opened without a key or the trunk or hood the alarm will go off. i learned this the hard way. to turn off the alarm you have to simply put your key in the door and turn, alarm will go off.
any pics?

im still confused about this FIPK..whats the difference between that, and just getting a K&N air filter? what more does it have than just the filter

yeah, that's what i thought about the K&N thing. i'll probably get that sometime this week. i've heard it's really easy to put on. would i be able to do it? i know alot about cars, but not how to work on them. could i really mess anything up?
so there aren't any other relatively inexpensive performance mods that i could do? hmm, i guess i'll have to start saving up for exhaust then. someone told me that the borla catback costs $1000. how much of a hp gain do you see with that?
and youngvr4 how exactly did you find that out the hard way? were you trying to break into your own car? that just sounded weird that you said you had to learn it the hard way and yet you have to somehow open the locked door without unlocking it to do that. anyways, i'll probably get keyless entry/alarm sometime soon. i guess it will be interesting when the alarm goes off if i have both a stock and aftermarket alarms :grinno: and as for the pictures, i'll try and upload something tomorrow maybe

well basically i closed my door but left the windows down. i left and came back and poped the hood by leaning down and pulling the release and after like 10 sec of me opening the trunk the alarm went off. and i didn't know how to turn it off so i drove for about a mile before the alarm went off

If u want a lil more hp you should get an unorthodox underdrive crank pulley kit, that gives u from 5-12 more hp but costs a lil over $200

Man go with the K&N FIPK its so much better. I got one on my 96 GT and I love it. You can tell the difference in HP its not much buts its noticeable. Also I got dynotek performance exhaust with dual tips and it cost me under $650 and sounds better and performs better I say. I had to have them take all the piping and everything with the exhaust out and get everything replaced so it wasnt cheap. And the guy who said K&N FIPK is not good is an idiot. Oh yeah and welcome to AF!
