pan gasket on 2001 Ford Ranger xlt

I took my 2001 Ford Ranger in to get the pan gasket replaced. They told me that they are going to have to remove the entire engine to get the gasket out, (costing loads more than I anticipated!), am I being taken to the cleaners? The mechanic said that this was a flaw in the way that Ford designed these rangers, is this true?

can you see the oil pan? does it seem as though itis simple? some of those are a dream and the others are a nightmare.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger. Last September my oil pan gasket blew out on the front side. My Hane's manual said the that for my model and year I did not have to remove the engine.
Basicly, It said to remove the starter, remove the motor mount nuts and hoist the engine as high as possible. Then remove the oil pan.
Not a chance. I did everything the manual said--there was no way that the oil pan was coming out. IMPOSSIBLE. So, I called a few garages who said that, according to there manuals the engine needed to be removed and they didn't want the job. So, since the truck had no oil, n oil pan gasket I had it towed to ford who fixed it for $600.
Since then, I have recieved a disk that contains ford manuals on it. According to the ford manual, the engine does not need to be removed, but the transmission does. It says basicly the same thing that the Hanes manual says except it says to remove the transmission. Looking back, this would have made sense and would have worked. Still, a lot of work.
Either way, I don't think your being taken to the cleaners. It is a hard job on the Ranger--In my opion. (I am not an expert)
Also, looking back I would have done things differently. The Ranger oil pan gasket is a one piece gasket which is why everything has to be removed. If this happened to me again, I would have done everything the same. Except with the engine hoisted up I would have cut the gasket and placed it on the oil pan in place. Then I would RTV the hell out of the joint where the gasket comes together.
