Ok, here is the story, I got this 91 civic about a year ago, it has a ton of miles but runs good, when it does. Never a problem except that it occasionally would not start for a couple of minutes, especially if it died due to letting the clutch out to fast. So this little problem I could live with. About two months ago it wouldnt start at all one morning. After a little searching I found it was not pumping gas at all. So I figured it had to be fuel pump. So I got a used tank with a pump in it from a car that was known to run. I put the used tank in and it started right up. It ran great all the way to work, 50 miles, and the next morning started right up and ran great for about 20 miles. So I am cruising along about 65 miles an hour with no worries and then sputtering, and loss of power. I pull of the road and need to feather the gas to keep it going but then it dies. It starts again twice but missing badly. then it wont start at all. I check it out and it has plenty of pressure at the bottom of the throttle body. I tried a few more times to start it until I was sure it was flooded. So I spend the entire morning and part of the afternoon getting a dolly to get it home. Once I unload it at home, it starts right up and runs fine.... So is it one of these stupid relays I have heard about. or as I suspect, a bad coil that is cutting out when its warm??
Also possibly a bad fuel filter or junk in gas tank??? I already know lots of things it could be. I am looking for fairly definitive answers here.... Please and thanks for anyone with knowledge of a similar problem.

Rock On.....

I would start with the cheap stuff first - filter, clean ot the gas tank, fuel system cleaner etc then move on to getting a main relay, cap&rotor, ignition coil, plugs and wires. if you shop smart, you'll prolly spend less than $150 minus the coil. It may be a much needed service for your high mileage civic.

could very well be cap and rotor. or ignitor or coil. but since it was running i am leaning towards cap & rotor.

to check if it's bad ignitor or coil you simply pull out a spark plug and ground it to something like your valve cover. have somebody crank the car and look for spark. no spark means replacement.

now let me go get you the page from the service manual...

ignitor:

coil:

the electrical section for more info:

the main page in case you ever want any other civic/crx info:

it says crx, for the most part civic & crx stuff is the same
